Born:

'Moon and its clouds always guiding me through a life of lives...' (lyrics from 012) 'He wails in on alto sax, like a banshee trying to charm a cobra.' Dan McClenaghan at allaboutjazz.com about Sha. "R'n'B', Minimalfunk, Ambient", is Sha’s (*1983) answer to the question about influences on his music. Isa Wiss (vocals), Mik Keusen (piano), Thomas Tavano (bass) und Julian Sartorius (drums) have been working with him in his band Banryu since 2004 and with 'Chessboxing Volume One' are now presenting their first album. Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, where he became proficient on assorted saxophones, clarinet, and flute. He earned a degree in music from his hometown school the University of Michigan in 1997, studying with Roscoe Mitchell, Donald Sinta, and Christopher Creviston; afterward, he went on to study with Steve Adams and Henry Threadgill as well. Peter A. Schmid

Born:

Musically active for over twenty years in various groups blurring the boundaries between jazz, improvised music and modern classic music. In (almost) every formation, own compositions and concepts with plenty of room for structured or free improvisation are used. A melting and fusing of composed and improvised parts is a central concern. Over the past few years, duos " beside wind ensembles - have become more and more my favorite form. They allow a very direct and personal communication between two independent musicians, and furthermore, it usually means regular collaboration poses no organizational problem… Since 2003, I play regular duo concerts at my homeplace in Uster, Switzerland, with both musicians with whom I play duets for years as well as with “new” musicians, who meet for spontaneous improvised concerts. CD trilogy with woodwind duos: September Duos with Evan Parker, Birdology with Vinny Golia and en passant with Ned Rothenberg. An important field is music in special architectonical and acoustic buildings. Concerts and recordings in an empty water cistern in Zürich (with Vollmond, September Winds and in duo with Evan Parker and Matthias Ziegler)

Damian J Sanchez, biography July 19, 2016 A Miami native by way of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Damian J Sanchez remembers the “Magic City” amidst the 1990s onslaught of Cuban refugees and enduring his teenage years in one of Miami's roughest neighborhoods, Little Havana. His musical journey commenced at the age of 12. He began by learning music theory before picking up an instrument with Jon Hamm at Citrus Grove Middle School and later guitar, piano, oboe, and saxophone from Mr. Hamm and band director, Carlos A. Paul Lieberman

Born:

Early in saxophone and flute player Paul Lieberman’s career during a session at Mickey Hart’s, Gil Evans commented to Airto “everything he plays sounds right”—and David Sanborn responded to a NY performance with a surprise kiss. Paul’s critically acclaimed new CD “Ibeji” reached multiple best of the year lists and generated nominations for Latin Jazz Flutist of the Year & Brazilian Jazz Album of the Year. It looks at Brazilian music and Jazz as twin children of Mother Africa separated at birth, raised in distant parts of the world and now reunited, with the stellar support Rufus Reid & Nilson Matta on bass, Duduka da Fonseca, Tim Horner, and Allman Brothers co- founder Jaimoe on drums, Joel Martin on piano, and Eugene Friesen on cello.
Reviewers say "Lieberman [who] is a soulful player on any instrument, conveying deep emotional content...demonstrates his instrumental mastery and also reveals himself as a formidable composer" in this “stunning, heartfelt, and emotional” recording
