If, on the other hand, it conjures up campy college ensembles singing joke versions of "Like A Virgin" in boxer shorts… think again. Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, "We take the music very seriously; we just don't take ourselves too seriously." Professor RJ Ross

Nine years ago Professor RJ Ross was given only months to live. After a lifetime of making music, Ross had assembled his own band, The University of Soul, and set out to record his album. However, just as recording was about to begin, Ross was diagnosed with a rare form of Stage-IV cancer and was thrust into what he calls "a roller-coaster ride of heartbreaking joy and dark despair." Told his cancer was incurable and to "get his affairs in order," the Professor refused to accept his fate and set out on a five-year quest to prove the doctors wrong. Jonatha Brooke

Jonatha Brooke is an American folk rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. She began her career in the 1980s as one half of the folk duo The Story, and began her solo career in 1994. Her music merges elements of folk, rock and pop, often with poignant lyrics and complex harmonies. Brooke formed The Story in the early 1980s along with a friend and classmate at Amherst College, Jennifer Kimball. Despite playing locally on a regular basis during their college career, the duo never issued any demos or albums during this period. They took a break for a period after graduation, during which time Brooke joined a dance troupe

Tonye Scott

Tonye Scott sings and performs with spirit, heart, soul and passion. Tonye Scott was born in San Francisco, California and grew up in Berkeley, California; however, her roots are firmly planted in New Orleans, Louisiana. Tonye's mother, who performed gospel and opera, inspired her. At the age of seven, Tonye made her first solo appearance, coached and accompanied by her mother on piano. In Junior High school, Tonye formed a female vocal group called “The Chimes”. Later on in High School, she performed as a solo act touring the local circuit. Upon graduating from high school, she received a scholarship for her acting and musical talents and was given the opportunity to be one of the first to participate in the Young Musicians Program at the University of California, Berkeley

Denise Donatelli, a 2-time Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed Savant recording artist, has become one of today’s premiere jazz vocalists. Denise's GRAMMY nominations include her 2012 release SOUL SHADOWS for Best Jazz Vocal Album and her 2010 release When Lights are Low — which received two Grammy nominations, one for Best Jazz Vocal Album and another for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist for pianist and collaborator Geoffrey Keezer for his arrangement of "Don't Explain." Denise’s four recordings, Soul Shadows (Savant Records, September 2012), When Lights are Low (Savant Records 2010), What Lies Within (Savant Records 2008), and In the Company of Friends (Jazzed Media 2005), have consistently topped the National Jazz Week radio charts

Cathrine Legardh

Cathrine Legardh , born 1973, jazz vocalist singing swing, bebop and Nordic tunes. Studied with Fionna Duncan (Scotland) and most recently in New York with vocal mentors Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton eg.. Just released jazz debut featuring the awardwinning, Scottish Brian Kellock (p) and Hugo Rasmussen (b) + Jacob Fischer (g) eg. CD was launched in June 2008 by Storyville Records in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Cathrine also writes and performs for children in her project NullerNix for sjov!. She organizes charity concerts + vocal jazz workshops, and continuously tries to build up the network among musicians, in particular jazz singers, in DK and abroad

Paulette Dozier is an all in one professional polished package. She can do it all and she has a track record on three continents to prove it! Born in North Florida, Paulette Dozier began her exploration of the performing arts while living in Brooklyn, New York. Her first encounter with the theater was during high school where she appeared in the play "You Can't Take it With You"

Hope Waits

Hope Waits possesses that rare talent that is born of challenge, pain, and heart. Her story eerily parallels those of many of the great soul and blues singers whose essence she reflects. Hope grew up in the Deep South - Monroe, Louisiana to be exact. She was the 7th of 12 children born to an alcoholic father and spent her childhood moving from place to place, often with no food for Hope and her siblings. She grew up singing in church and was discouraged by her overprotective mother. Her passion stayed locked deep inside during Hope’s teen years. After her mother was murdered, Hope - at age 21 - began to explore her birthright and also began to sing again. Chance brought Hope into Chessvolt Studios in the spring of 2006

Copernicus

Perhaps the most fitting way to describe Copernicus is as a performance poet. Even though he (originally named Joseph Smalkowski) plays keyboards, Copernicus refuses to be categorised as a musician. Despite often having inhabited the alternative New York rock'n'roll scene, his music also exudes strong elements of jazz, classical and the avant garde. Even though Copernicus' preferred recording strategy is that of improvisation, his epic pieces tend to revolve around themes, riffs and repeated clusters, moving along a clearly linear pathway. The booming delivery and abstract texts evoke the spirit of classic beat generation poetry, but the Copernicus stance goes back even further to the theatrical confrontations of the Dada movement
