Flo Ankah

Floanne is a songstress bringing her unique modern twist to vintage tunes. A refreshing blend of country girl and urban actress, Floanne is inspired by an eclectic range of performers and musical traditions. Known in the nightclub scene as an interpreter of French chansons, especially the Edith Piaf repertoire, Floanne is backed by New York's top jazz improvisers. Passionate about lyrics and acoustics, the chanteuse uses her versatile three-octave instrument with magic and spontaneity. A regular of the New York nightclub scene (Joe's Pub, Symphony Space, the Standard Hotel, Sleep No More, Bryant Park and MoMA), Floanne recently sang at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, the Philadelphia Art Museum and the French Ambassador’s residence in Washington.

Nicky Schrire

Born: August 22

Nicky Schrire is a multitalented and inventive British-South African vocalist and composer based in Toronto, Canada. Her work has seen her likened to vocalists Joni Mitchell, Norma Winstone, and Esperanza Spalding with The Boston Globe’s Jon Garelick noting that “though her approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial…she’s got her own thing, and it’s very much worth listening to.”

A graduate of the South African College of Music and New York’s Manhattan School of Music, she studied with Anthea Haupt, Peter Eldridge, Theo Bleckmann, and Dave Liebman. Schrire has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Dublin and South Africa, with musicians including Ben Wendel, Gerald Clayton, Fabian Almazan, Nir Felder, and Taylor Eigsti. She released three critically acclaimed jazz albums-2012's "Freedom Flight", 2013's "Space and Time", and the 2014 EP "To The Spring"-which earned her comparisons to songwriters like Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her duo album “Space & Time” featured Grammy-nominated pianists Gerald Clayton, Gil Goldstein and Fabian Almazan. The Ottawa Citizen’s Peter Hum described the recording as “fifty minutes of emotionally eventful, richly crafted music”.

Performance highlights include headlining the 2018 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, performing at Jazz at Lincoln Centre for Carnegie Hall’s Ubuntu Festival, performances in the UK at Royal Festival Hall and the Vortex, and having her composition ESCAPE: The Ingrid Jonker Suite programmed for the 2022 String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam (sadly cancelled due to COVID).

Schrire was delighted to be awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant to record her new album "Nowhere Girl", to be released on 9 June 2023 on Anzic Records. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer Oded Lev-Ari, the album features a rhythm section comprising Canadian trio Myriad3 (Ernesto Cervini, Dan Fortin, Chris Donnelly), saxophonist Tara Davidson, guest vocalist Laila Biali, and Mozambican guitarist Julio Sigauque (Freshlyground).

As a journalist and broadcaster, Schrire was a contributing host and producer for Toronto’s JazzFM.91 station, creating and presenting the weekly segment "This Bright North" from 2021 to 2022. She has been a contributing journalist for LondonJazz News for over a decade, covering the 2014 Berlin Jazz Festival and starting the "Mothers In Jazz" series. 

Barbara Reney

Lyricist, Composer, Arranger, Vocalist, Producer Produced Mini Jazz Fest / Marathon of world-class Montreal Jazz musicians at Rialto Theatre in Montreal titled: Du Jazz pour le Japon Montreal. Over 70 outstanding Jazz musicians - vocalists and instrumentalists, across all styles of Jazz - appeared on stage at the renovated historic opera house on Park Avenue to raise disaster relief funds. Vocal experiences range from studio vocal back-up on commercial recordings, Jazz vocalist fronting various group combinations, to Gospel and Classical. Fronted own Jazz formations of varying sizes and members.

Shelley Fisher

Shelley Fisher was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is an international entertainer known for his songwriting, screen acting roles and production talents.He moved to Chicago at the age of ten years old and grew up on the city’s West side. Fisher began his musical career by studying theory, composition and vocal technique with James L. Mack in the Chicago Junior College System and vocal coach Gisela Gottling at The Chicago Conservatory of Music at Roosevelt University. Elise Pratt

Born: December 29, 1945

Vocalist Elise Pratt, who moved to Hendersonville from St. Simons Island, GA, picks her repertoire from what she calls the American songbook. Her singing reflects early influences from her father, a jazz sax player, and of favorite singers Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Anita O’Day, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme. Her musical experience has included musical theater, dinner theater, a-cappella Renaissance singing groups, dancing, jazz duos and trios in clubs and restaurants. Originally from California, then Oklahoma, Elise studied French and became a Pan Am flight attendant based in New York

Khani Cole

Born: May 7, 1966

Khani Cole's assent into the national and international consciousness began after relocating to Phoenix, Arizona from her native Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1992. The move, which initiated many personal changes, sparked the inception of her very first release, Piece Of My Soul, on Fahrenheit Records. Piece Of My Soul was an album with great depth harmonically and lyrically and was quite a departure from the production and performance trends heard on NAC (Smooth Jazz) radio at that time. The release caught on nationwide; specifically in markets with a more liberal radio philosophy. Piece Of My Soul featured jazz greats, Brian Bromberg, Joey DeFrancesco and Marco Russo among others, as Khani and her band toured the summer of '97 and were met with an overwhelming positive response. Khani's follow-up release, Places, Grammy Award winning producer, Michael Broening first outing was a Smooth Jazz Radio gem with the album's first single, a cover of the classic Blood Sweat & Tears' favorite, You've Made Me SoVery Happy, featuring Nelson Rangell climbing to the top 30 on the NAC Radio charts as Khani and the band played 28 US cities including, Art Good's Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival, along with other noted festivals and events throughout the country. Khani made her first trek into Europe playing Germany as Places met with fantastic reception on European radio and with Euro- audience. Khani's most recent Expansion Records' (Sony/3MV - UK) release, Lifetime - produced by veteran New York based writer-producers, Chris Parks & Vivian Sessoms (Lalah Hathaway, Rob Thomas, Dianne Reeves)
