James Sudakow

James Sudakow is a third generation classically trained violinist and started playing at the age of four. Despite the classical upbringing, he has always gravitated to rock, fusion, jazz, and progressive music.
During his early twenties, he was invited to play in a band and hooked up electrically for the first time. That completely opened up an entirely new view he had of his instrument. After years of honing his own style, he released his debut all instrumental rock/fusion/progressive CD--Green, which received acclaim particularly in the progressive rock and fusion community. He has just released the follow up CD--There is no Sound in Space--which has an industrial electronica undertone but still has elements of fusion, rock, and improvisation.

"There is a generation of young string players who have come up with equal regard for the Bach Cello Suites and Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced, for Beethoven’s String Quartets and the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Inner Mounting Flame. They dig Dvorak, Debussy and Ravel but also have committed to memory John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and Led Zeppelin IV. "Violinist-composer-arranger Mads Tolling is definitely in that number. As a longstanding member for the last six years of both the fearless, genre-hopping Turtle Island Quartet and also bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clarke’s band, he is quite accustomed to shattering boundaries and pushing the envelope while dealing in the longstanding tradition of musical cross-fertilization (aka ‘fusion’)
