Musician

Russell Gunn

Born:

If one were attempting to design a prototype for the quintessential contemporary musician in the African-American tradition, trumpeter/fluegelhornist/composer Russell Gunn would be an ideal model. A certified member of the hip-hop generation by age (born in 1971) and geography (the hardcore ghetto of East St. Louis), Russell's early aspirations in the world of rap music took precedence over the trumpet that he began playing in fourth grade. When he reached sixteen, the deadline he set for his hip-hop career to take off, his dedication to the art of jazz took shape. Rather than abandoning the music he loved, he simply applied its energy, spirit and fiercely proud intellectual rage to the jazz idiom, creating a synthesis that is truly contemporary and singular, exemplified by his groundbreaking group, Ethnomusicology. As the name clearly indicates, Gunn, like most of the finest young musicians to emerge in the past decade, has developed his music from a wide variety of musical influences

Carlo Bohlander

Born:

I met Carlo in 1971 while I was working for Anita at her club across the Maine in Frankfurt. Carlo was opening a new club, DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE and Teddy who was to manage it wasn't able so Carlo asked me to open it. I worked for him most of that year. He gave me an apartment next to his above the club on Mainstrasse as part of our arrangement. The club was a beautiful place, small but intimate. I think he hoped to bring in some income and musicians. Because I was much younger at the time, mid 20's, my friends and acquaintances were primarily Blues and Folk musicians but our almost nightly jam sessions included Jazz players, classically trained musicians of all degrees of ability

Gerard Presencer

Gerard Presencer is universally recognized as one of the best trumpet / flugelhorn players in his field. His most celebrated recorded performance, which has lead to his being described as "subliminally, the most famous trumpeter in the world", is his solo work on the 3 million selling album by US3, "Hand on the Torch" (1993) on Blue Note. It is Gerards' trumpet that is featured so heavily on the big hit of that CD, Cantaloop. Presencer was born in London on September 12, 1972. At the age of 11 he became a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and at the age of 15 he made his recording debut with the alto Peter King. Paolo Fresu

Born:

The village marching band and the most important international awards, the Sardinian countryside and the albums, discovering jazz and his many collaborations, his love of small things and Paris.

There are not many people capable of putting together such a diverse array of elements and turn it into such an incredible and fast stylistic growth. Paolo Fresu succeeded in a country like Italy where, for too long, jazz was famous just like Shakespeare or Matisse paintings, Armstrong was little more than a freak show and Miles Davis was acknowledged well after his creative peak. The magic lies in the spontaneous way in which he managed to convey the deepest meanings and magic of his native land with the most precious of the arts.
