Musician

Tom Chang

Born in Seoul, South Korea before immigrating to Toronto, Canada as a child, Tom Chang was inspired to play guitar after hearing Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. This initial flush of rock guitar attraction was followed by equally heavy concentration in the blues, then finally jazz, in the shape of guitarists Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. In the mid-1980s, Chang enrolled at Los Angeles’ Guitar Institute of Technology where he majored in jazz performance. He studied privately with Scott Henderson, Joe Diorio, and the late Ted Greene. Chang’s rapid advancement led to professional work with everyone from comedian (then cabaret performer) Sandra Bernhard to crooner Luther Vandross

Sam Trapchak: Land Grab

Read "Land Grab" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Sam Trapchak's debut as a leader, Lollipopocalypse (Raw Toast Records, 2011) highlighted a double-bassist with formidable abilities and forward thinking music performed by an exceptional crew of like-minded musicians. Land Grab furthers his exploits of jazz off-the-beaten-path. This time around, the music delves into freer and more adventurous designs with plenty of room ...

Tom Chang: Tongue and Groove

Read "Tongue and Groove" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Tom Chang: Tongue and Groove

Born in South Korea, he moved to Canada with formative teen years listening to rock icons like Joni Mitchell and Led Zeppelin. What comes ...

Tom Chang: Tongue and Groove

Read "Tongue and Groove" reviewed by Mark Corroto

When did the ultimate compliment for a jazz performance switch from “you swing, cat" to “you rock, dude"? Perhaps it happened after a generation of jazz artists raised on rock-n-roll found their way into improvisation and the latitudes of expression that jazz enable. Case in point is Tongue And Groove by guitarist Tom Chang.

Tom Chang: Tongue and Groove

Read "Tongue and Groove" reviewed by Dave Wayne

Look at the lineup on Tom Chang's Tongue & Groove! There is literally no way that this album could be anything less than great. Listening, repeatedly, to Tongue & Groove has, in fact, borne this out. Chang utilizes the increasingly popular two-reeds / bass / drums configuration to frame brief, but consistently spectacular, improvisations in the ...

Sam Trapchak's Put Together Funny: Lollipopocalypse

Read "Lollipopocalypse" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Bassist Sam Trapchak's debut, Lollipopocalypse, is inspired by a character who experiences some very unsavory candy in the Toni Morrison novel Song of Solomon. But Trapchak and his curiously named group, Put Together Funny, dish out some palatable music with a release that is equally accessible and stimulating. Replete with infectious melodies, risk-taking compositions, and cohesive ...
