Joe Porter

Joe Porter hails from the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, where he learned to play bass guitar and double bass while studying music at St. Petersburg Junior College. In 2000 he graduated from the University of South Florida with a bachelor's degree in jazz performance. Soon after graduating, Joe was asked to join the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau band on a world tour from 2001-2003. During his tenure he also had the chance to perform with singer Diane Schuur. Joe left the band in 2003 to pursue a freelance career as a jazz bassist which he continues from his home base in St. Petersburg, Florida

Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, this sextet features Rio de Janeiro singer Andrea Moraes Manson and a crew of experienced Latin jazz musicians performing samba-jazz, Bossa Nova, Balanço, Baião and MPB. O Som Do Jazz (the sound of jazz in Portuguese) recaptures the grace, energy and spirit of 1960s Brazilian music.

Trained as an architect, O Som Do Jazz singer Andrea Moraes Manson moved to the Tampa Bay area from Rio de Janeiro, she began performing with her jazz musician husband, David Manson. Andrea has a natural understanding of this wonderful music and sings from the heart, like only a Brazilian can, in Portuguese and English

John O'Leary

John is a Mexican American jazz pianist and neuroscientist. He’s the pianist for the highly acclaimed trio La Lucha in the Tampa Bay area. John has had a winding path. He was born in the Yucatan Peninsula where he started piano lessons at age three and played classical piano until the age of 12. Once in the US, he picked up the tuba in the concert band and continued to develop his musicianship through high school. As a tuba player, he was selected to perform in the All-State Concert Band, and attained superior ratings in state level solo performances. As a pianist, he played in the Zephyrhills jazz band and went with the band to the State Band competition

William Evans

Jazz pianist William Evans was born in Detroit. He started out playing in the church and later studied under trumpet player Marcus Belgrave. He went on to work in Detroit with local greats Roy Brooks, Robert Hurst and Tami Tabbal. Evans toured with pop star Mary Wilson, formerly of The Supremes. In the mid-1980s Evans performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Jimmy Witherspoon Currently, Evans divides his time between Basel Switzerland, where he is a longtime faculty member at the Swiss Jazz School, and St. Petersburg, FL where he maintains a residence. While in Florida, Evans works with drummer/vocalist Patricia Dean at various venues on the southwest coast. Phil has been a musician for over 45 years. He plays drums, bass, keyboards, and guitars. Phil's early influences that pointed him toward the Jazz world include Chuck Mangione, Pat Metheny, Yellowjackets, Spyro Gyra, Tim Weisberg, Harry Connick Jr, and the Bob Mintzer Big Band. Phil is also heavily into many independent artists. Being an indie himself, Phil is a staunch advocate of the independent music community. Chuck Owen

The recipient of five individual GRAMMY nominations as well as a prestigious 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship, Chuck Owen’s compositions have been performed throughout the world; by the Netherlands’ Metropole Orch., WDR Big Band, Brussels Jazz Orch., Aarhus Big Band, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orch., Tonight Show Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, and numerous others.  

However, since 1995, Owen’s primary creative outlet has been his own 19-piece Jazz Surge.  Serving as conductor as well as primary composer/arranger, he has produced each of the Surge’s 7 highly feted CDs.  Whispers On the Wind, released in 2017, was recognized with 4 GRAMMY Nominations (including for best composition) while also named #1 Big Band Album in the annual Jazz Station Awards.  River Runs (2013), a stunning 5-movement genre-bending orchestral/big band hybrid and The Comet’s Tail (2009) also received GRAMMY nominations.

David Manson

David Manson is a trombonist, composer, improvisor, presenter and music technologist with a diverse range of experience in music. His degrees include a doctorate from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He began his performance career with positions in the Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra and Memphis Symphony Orchestra and taught low brass and jazz studies at Indiana State University before returning to Florida. He has been soloist and composer with the BONK New Music Festival, Subtropics New Music Festival, Society of Composers and SEAMUS. He has performed and recorded with Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Eugene Chadbourne, John Lindberg, Davey Williams and other innovators.  He has also backed popular artists including Henry Mancini, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Johnny Mathis, Burt Bacharach and toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

David's solo recordings include "Modern Music for Trombone" (lps 3209) and "Beast" (isospin)
