He started the guitar as an autodidact and tried out different styles and techniques (blues, rock, fusion, picking, jazz, classical) before specializing in jazz and improvisation.

His trips to the USA (NYC, Boston, Los Angeles) allow him to perfect his approach to jazz.

When JUNO Nominee Rafael Zaldivar sits down at the piano, he brings a wealth of inspiration to the keys: his compositions display his percussion expertise, his many years of collaborating with top jazz musicians, and his cultural heritage. Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Zaldivar is carrying on a rich family legacy of musicianship. After taking up percussion and piano at a young age, Zaldivar pursued his studies at the Higher Institute of Arts in Havana. Jazz Interlude is a 3-piece instrumental jazz band located in Portland, Oregon. We specialize in jazz and swing standards from the 1930's to 1960's as well as a diverse array of original compositions written by various members of the band. Jazz Interlude has been on the Portland music scene since 2012. During that time, we've been fortunate to have a monthly residence at O'Connors Vault where we continue to sell out the venue on a regular basis. We have also played at Mazza's, Camellia Lounge, Bar Carlo, Portland Pairings Wine Shop and special events such as the Newborn Oktoberfest, National Night Out, weddings, holiday parties, corporate parties, fundraisers, and many others

Tony began playing brass at school, before moving to Clarinet at the age of 12, and Saxophone a bit later. He turned professional in the early ‘80s, playing sax as a session musician in London, and running various rock bands in night clubs and on the gig circuit in London and South Wales. He maintained his interest in the Clarinet, and in the early ‘90s began playing jazz on the circuit in the West Country, whilst teaching on the Performing Arts syllabus at North Devon College. Moving to Surrey in ‘98, he is now widely known as a Reeds teacher, with students ranging from adult beginners to advanced Grade 8 and Diploma-level specialists
