Lica Cecato: Call Porter

by Angelo Leonardi

Steely Dan

Active since:
Steely Dan has been more of a conceptual framework for inventive music-making than a typical rock band. Spearheaded by a pair of resourceful musical auteurs Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - they have done nothing by the books since launching Steely Dan in 1972. The band’s very name is a scatological reference from a novel by Beat Generation anti-hero William Burroughs. Though Steely Dan recorded prolifically for much of the Seventies, they toured for only a brief spell early in that decade, deciding they much preferred the studio to the road. This allowed them to craft a wry, nuanced and hyper-literate series of albums - seven in all, released from 1972 to 1980 - that are highly regarded by connoisseurs of pop hooks, jazz harmony and desiccating wit. Beneath the highly polished surface of Steely Dan’s music, astute listeners could hear a visceral love of and identification with the very soul of jazz

Amanda Addleman: Into the Light

by Jerome Wilson
There are a lot of young singers around whose music draws equally from the fluidity of jazz and the confessional focus of the singer-songwriter genre. San Francisco's Amanda Addleman is one of those. This CD mixes personal original songs with standards and she delivers both with a deceptively light but powerful voice and understated passion.

Lauren Lee: Windowsill

by Jerome Wilson
Lauren Lee is a talented pianist and composer, and a singer with a flexibility and sense of adventure in her voice which give her music a light, optimistic feel, although repeated listening reveals it has surprising depth and complexity. She brings elements of art song into the realm of pop-jazz as if she were Meredith Monk ...
Bob Sheppard: The Clark Kent of Jazz

by Jim Worsley
An unassuming bespectacled man in his mid-sixties walks on to the stage. In a band with stellar, famous, and maybe flashier musicians, one could be forgiven if they didn't even notice him right away. But as soon as Bob Sheppard presses a saxophone, clarinet, or flute onto his lips, he is super, man! An incredible musician ...
Adan Hagley: Insomnia

by Nigel Campbell
The Trinidad-born Nobel laureate, VS Naipaul, implied that Trinidad and Tobago was a country of mimic men, but its geographic location in the world and social history makes the pull of myriad sonic and rhythmic influences inevitable. Adan Hagley on his debut album, Insomnia, has made those connections from his wide listening palette. He cites Michel ...
Michael Leonhart: Suite Extracts Vol. 1

by Angelo Leonardi
