Schultzing

”War das schon immer so?” - ” Has it always been like this?” This is not only the title of the latest album of schultzing featuring clarinetist Claudio Puntin - listening to their music, one might want to ask exactly that! The answer is clearly yes! And clearly no! Stefan Schultze (piano/composition), Peter Ehwald (saxophone/composition), Hanna Jursch (vocals), Peter Schwebs (bass) and Timo Warnecke (drums) have been creating many facetted acoustic images right from the beginning! Acoustic images with little regard for catagorisation: images of jazz, and pop, and a hint of contemporary music! And no, it hasn‘t always been this way, - they‘re always on the look out for suitable sounds, questioning the kind of practices and conventions we are used to, and at the same time often mirroring them with a good dose of humour! “Hell! Gold! Dunkel! Mond! Tanz!” - ” Light! Gold! Dark! Moon! Dance!” The song titles of the second schultzing CD are kept short and simple! It was produced after being awarded the “Best International Jazz Group” at Concurso Internacional de Intérpretes de Jazz in Granada, Spain! Both the music and lyrics leave the listener plenty of room for associations, they are clear and playful, full of rhythm and fragile, both earthy and airy! German texts in the mostly English world of jazz and the use of the human voice are distinctive characteristics of the band‘s sound! The musicians capture virtuosity and complexity and give it a human face! Clarity! Groove! Chaos and harmony: schultzing! Anja Buchmann Cologne, Germany (February 2009)
