Hubert Fol

Born: November 11, 1925

Hubert Fol was a French jazz saxophonist and bandleader. Fol was Raymond Fol's brother, and learned piano from an early age through lessons from his mother. He also took lessons in violin and clarinet in his teens and early twenties. As a saxophonist, he worked with Claude Abadie and Boris Vian and cofounded the Be Bop Minstrels with his brother in 1947. In 1949-1950 he toured Europe and recorded with Coleman Hawkins, then worked with Kenny Clarke and Django Reinhardt before embarking on another European tour with Dizzy Gillespie and Rex Stewart. Fol's health deteriorated in the 1960s, which led to his playing far less frequently.

Donny McCaslin

Saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his band, featured on David Bowie‘s Blackstar, will make their Motéma Music debut with the October 14 release of Beyond Now, a highly anticipated album dedicated to Bowie. Recorded nearly three months after Bowie’s passing, the project is deeply influenced by their extraordinary experience collaborating with one of the greatest artists of all-time on his final album.

“It was like a dream except it was something I never could have dreamed of,” reflects McCaslin on working hand-in-hand with Bowie on Blackstar. “David Bowie was a visionary artist whose generosity, creative spirit, and fearlessness will stay with me the rest of my days. Beyond Now is dedicated to him and to all who loved him.”

Nick Ayoub

Born: September 7, 1926

Ayoub was born in Trois-Rivières, Québec from Lebanon immigrants. He soon moved to Montreal where he started to learn clarinet, tenor saxophone, oboe, english horn and flute. He studied in Montreal Music Conservatory and perfected oboe with Harold Gomberg of New-York Philharmonic Orchestra. He began his career playing with big bands in Montreal like Johnny Holmes Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson or Butch Watanabe. He also featured a couple of times as oboist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and accompanied many Quebec prominent singers like Claude Léveillée. He worked a lot as a studio musician and teached jazz to some important Quebec contemporary jazz musicians like Yannick Rieu & François Théberge, now playing all around the world. He never stop playing in clubs in company of musicians like Art Roberts and Al Penfold with whom he recorded The Montreal Scene in 1964. He died in Montreal on May, 2nd 1981

Born: August 16, 1974

Fostina Dixon is a composer, vocalist and jazz soloist who plays soprano, alto and baritone saxes; flute; and clarinet. Ms. Dixon has been guest soloist with Abbey Lincoln, Barry Harris, Earl May and the Big Apple Jazzwomen. She has also played with Gil Evans, Roy Ayers, Tom Browne, Charlie Persip, Melba Liston, Cab Calloway, Slide Hampton, Frank Foster, Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Bobby Vinton, Sammy Davis, Jr., Prince, and Marvin Gaye, with whom she toured for four years. She was a member of the Gerald Wilson, Jimmy Cleveland and Leslie Drayton big bands. Fostina Dixon is a native of Wilmington, Delaware where she studied with the late Robert "Boysie" Lowery

Walter Blanding

Born: August 14, 1971

Walter Blanding (Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, Clarinet) was born on August 14, 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio to a musical family and began playing the saxophone at age six. In 1981, he moved with his family to New York City, and by age 16, he was performing regularly with his parents at the Village Gate. Mr. Blanding attended LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and the Performing Arts and continued his studies at the New School for Social Research. Mr. Blanding lived in Israel for 4 years, where he had a major impact on the music scene, inviting great artists such as Louis Hayes, Eric Reed and others to perform

Alex Foster

Born: May 10, 1953

A musical heavyweight, saxophonist Alex Foster has been a part of many of the world’s most influential sounds to date. Best known in recent years for his work as the alto saxophonist in the house band of Saturday Night Live, he has also shared the stage with numerous world-class performers in varying genres. Besides being a member of the SNL house band, he is also the musical director of the Mingus Big Band, Orchestra, and Dynasty and is currently completing his latest album featuring all original compositions. In the jazz scene, he has been heard on recordings and has performed alongside greats such as Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Jack DeJohnette, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Nat and Cannonball Adderley, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Gil Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield, Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones, Thad Jones, Hank Jones, Tito Puente, Michael Brecker, Duke Ellington and more

Bill Evans - Saxophone

Born: February 9, 1958

Evans is a world class saxophonist and producer who made his debut on the international music scene in the 1980’s with Miles Davis (at the age of 21) and recorded 6 records with Davis. This led to touring and recording with the likes of John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Mick Jagger to name a few. Today, with 26 solo albums to date, Grammy nods, and countless collaborations and tours, Evans has continued to explore a dazzling variety of adventurous musical settings as a pioneering bandleader, consistently winning fans in the worldwide arena.

Recent highlights include touring and/or performing with his own Bill Evans Band, Robben Ford (Soulgrass meets Blues), Phil Lesh & Friends, The Mike Stern/Bill Evans Band, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Zen Amadeus - the group Bill and drum icon Simon Phillips put together. There were countless sit-ins with The Allman Brothers Band, Warren Haynes, and a collage of others. Evans spent much of 2016 and 2017 touring the world with the Bill Evans Band in support of his album “Rise Above”.

Vladimir Chekasin

Born: February 24, 1947

b. 24 February 1947, Sverdlovsk, Russia. During the 90s Chekasin was the most highly regarded saxophonist in the former Soviet Union, his style a blend of the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s high-pressure hard bop (Chekasin frequently plays two or more horns at once), 60s New York free-jazz tenor and wild Peter Brötzmann -like howls, mixed with a great deal of onstage clowning and theatricality. A composer and keyboard player as well as a saxophonist, Chekasin was originally a violinist (he took it up at the age of six), then shifted to clarinet and alto saxophone, beginning to lead jazz bands around 1967

Ron Blake

Born: September 7, 1965

Tenor saxophonist Ron Blake and guitarist Bobby Broom have played together many times over the years, going back to Broom’s 1997 album, Waitin’ and Waitin,’ and beyond. It was Broom who hired Blake for his band shortly after his college years. The strong chemistry between these musicians is one of numerous elements that make Mistaken Identity—Blake’s first album under his own name in 15 years—special. (They’re joined by Nat Reeves or Reuben Rogers on bass and Kobie Watkins on drums.) Another key factor is the heartfelt inclusion of songs by jazz legends who have played important roles in Blake’s personal life as well as his career.
