Tomas Challenger is a leading figure of the young progressive jazz/improvisation scene in Britain. He is both a saxophonist and composer, and leads many of his own projects. He is also an active sideman and educator, and works in a variety of contexts. AJ Kluth is a Chicago based saxophonist/composer/educator enjoying the freelancing musician's life in the Midwest while continuing to pursue further academic ventures. Apart from his interest in music, AJ has been nursing abiding passions for literature, philosophy, theology, metaphysics - the list grows more and more pretentious. His book of transcriptions of solos by saxophonist Chris Potter (2007) has been warmly embraced by the jazz community. 2009 saw him signed to Seattle jazz label OA2 Records and the subsequent release of his quintet's album "Twice Now". Took up clarinet in university (self-taught) inspired by Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet and by the revival of traditional jazz that was the taking place in Europe.Then heard Lester Young & Billie Holiday (on recordings.) Took up tenor saxophone in 1963. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1971. Spent a few years in Victoria, Australia (2001-'06). Played with various groups in the South Gippsland area. Returned to NZ 2006. Jason's opportunities allowed him to perform with and learn from many of today's Jazz luminaries, such as Ellis Marsallis, Victor Goines, Todd Coolman, Gary Smulyan, Marcus Printup, Wycliff Gordon, Kevin Bales, Rodney Jordan, Bill Peterson, Russell Gunn, and Leon Anderson. In addition to his outstanding and memorable performances, Jason is a talented composer and an inspiring educator.
