Musician

Claude Werner

Born:

Claude R. Werner originally from Chile, landed in Newcastle upon Tyne by a circuitous route that took in New York, Paris, Barcelona, and goodness knows where else- a visiting Danish rhythm section greeted him as an old friend. Learnt his craft on the front-line playing with world class musicians across Europe. Those who have come to expect a sometimes slightly psychotic post-bopper tenor saxophonist are beguiled by the warm expressiveness of his tone in his most recent work, Thoughts and Recollections. Listen to the music.

Bob Roper

Born:

I studied music in New York City from 1973 to 1987. I studied with Lynn Oliver for the last nine years of that interval. I played in his big band which used the books of most of the historic swing and jazz big bands, and studied improvisation in his nonet which focused on his four hundred chart book of arrangements of standards and compositions of Horace Silver and material done by Art Blakey's band. I played mainstream jazz in the school, and with other groups outside at least four days a week on average from 1976 to 1987. Since then, I haven't had as many opportunities to play since most musicians elsewhere seem to insist on playing only at paying engagements, and likely prefer to watch TV otherwise

Musician

Tom Moon

Born:

A tenor saxophonist who played with the late Canadian bandleader Maynard Ferguson, Moon assembled a variety of Philadelphia musicians for what he calls the Moon Hotel Lounge Project, an all-instrumental collection that touches on elements of jazz, bossa nova and atmospheric fusion.

Inspired by Moon’s stays in snazzy hotel lounges while on the book tour for “1,000 Recordings,” the album is a cool and breezy listen, but the scraping guitar of Kevin Hanson on “Scaffolding, How to Dismantle” and a moody rearrangement of “Rock of Ages” (complete with a synthetic backdrop of vinyl “static”) are among the factors keeping things from drifting too far into the background.
