Stan Kenton and His Orchestra: Roots

Read "Roots" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Roots is a most appropriate title for this series of concerts by the Stan Kenton Orchestra recorded in 1944-45 on behalf of the Armed Forces Radio Service. While the sessions do include a handful of staples from the Kenton book ("Eager Beaver," “Reed Rapture," “Tampico," the well-known “Artistry in Rhythm" theme), it's clear that Kenton and ...

Musician

Tahina Rahary Malagasy Roots

The project emerges from Tahina’s need to highlight the varieties of influences acquired throughout his musical activity, both in music writing and his guitar technique. It took some years of experimentation, study, research and all the persistence to get the desired results. And it all comes together in the form of the Malagasy Roots, which in its deepest essence aims to merge all the ingredients of many musical styles - having Malagasy music and its peculiar rhythm and melodies as the fundamental basis, going through Portuguese music and Jazz, which is one of the main influences on Tahina training as a musician.

Musician

Kurt Leege

Born:

Raised a classical pianist, Kurt Leege learned to read music at the same time he learned to read. By the time he was in high school he developed a desire to write music, but found himself trapped in his classical training. As a means to express the music in his head, he taught himself to play guitar and he's been doing that ever since. At Swarthmore College, he studied jazz with John Alston and later played in his jazz ensemble, among other more pop music projects. During this time he also developed an affinity for skronk guitar from listening to the likes of Sonic Youth, MBV and Robert Quine
