Musician

Philip Catherine

Born:

Philip Catherine has been on the forefront of the European jazz scene since the sixties and worked with great artists like Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Charlie Mingus and Dexter Gordon. His unique approach and sound, his dedication to music have been important and influential, and today he is a source of inspiration for many artists of the new generation. Born in London in 1942 and being from a musical family, he developed a musical ear from an early age. When he was 18 he already toured Europe with Lou Bennett. With his recordings "September Man" and "Guitars" in the mid-seventies, jazz amateurs all over the world discovered not only a brilliant guitarist but also a talented composer: themes like "Homecomings" and "Nairam" have become famous. Philip Catherine has played in the most prestigious concert halls, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Carnegie Hall, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to the Olympia and Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels

European Jazz Conference 2024 Music Centre De Bijloke/Various venues Ghent, Belgium September 12-15, 2024 For such a relatively young music it is ironic that one of the issues facing jazz is old age. Aging audiences to be precise. But let us be clear, it is a good thing jazz retains ...

For many, Black Friday conjures up images of massive crowds battling each other to get their hands on marked down gift items at huge department stores. Martin Wind, Jim McNeely and Ed Neumeister 'Counterpoint' — Playful Dialogue Of Bass Instruments

Some projects can't be planned, they just happen as a lucky coincidence. In the case of Martin Wind's new album Counterpoint it all started with an email he received from a musician in Europe. Wind, who has lived in Teaneck, New Jersey, for 25 years and has made a name for himself as a bassist and ...

Martin Wind Quartet: My Astorian Queen

Read "My Astorian Queen" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Bassist Martin Wind reminds us that “nostalgia" is not a four-letter word (or nine-letter for that matter). Wind would say, “nein" to that idea. The German-born bassist, now a solid member of New York's jazz community, can be heard in piano trios led by Bill Mays, Ted Rosenthal, and Bill Cunliffe, in drummer Matt Wilson's various ...
