Pekka Pohjola
Born:
Jussi Pekka Pohjola was a Finnish multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer. Best known as a bass player, Pohjola was also a classically trained pianist and violinist. Originally Pohjola rose to fame as the bass player of the Finnish progressive rock band Wigwam, but he soon departed on a solo career, initially releasing Frank Zappa-nfluenced progressive rock albums. As his career progressed Pohjola developed a more novel musical style that could best be described as fusion jazz. In addition to Wigwam and his solo albums, Pohjola also played with Made in Sweden, The Group and the bands of Jukka Tolonen and Mike Oldfield. Pohjola belonged to one of the most prominent music families in Finland

Olli Ahvenlahti: Thinking, Whistling

by Anthony Shaw
When Mose Allison wrote in 1958 that 'a young man ain't got nothing in the world these days' he was probably not intending to make a philosophical statement--more a question of power politics. But now(adays) the line now suggests something else to me. I think neither Roger Daltrey nor I thought about it this way, at ...

Juhani Aaltonen: To Future Memories – The Music of Antti Hytti

by Dave Wayne
Can anyone just decide, on a whim, to take up an instrument and simply become a working musician anymore? That's precisely what Juhani Aaltonen did as an eighteen year-old living in the town of Inkeroinen, in central Finland back in the early 1950s. Apart from a year of study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and ...
Ligro: Dictionary 2

by Dave Wayne
Another great fusion band from Indonesia, Ligro is a co-operative trio comprised of guitarist Agam Hamzah, bassist Adi Darmawan, and drummer Gusti Hendi. Compared to the other Indonesian jazz and fusion artists on the MoonJune roster (Dewa Budjana, Tohpati Ario Hutomo, and the group SimakDialog) Ligro's sound is appreciably more aggressive and, dare I say, more ...

Bill FrisellHelsinki FestivalHelsinki, FInlandAugust 29, 2012 It's hard to find a summer festival that is not critically dependent on the weather for that essential vibe. Trio Chaud Laulumiehet Restaurant, Helsinki, Finland March 29, 2011 When musicians play together, it might be assumed that they're enjoying themselves, but it's also true that playing can be a very serious business. The combination of play and pleasure is in no way inextricable, but when it occurs both phenomena take ...
