Medeski Martin & Wood

Somewhere, someplace, someone is debating the future of live and recorded music, speaking in somber tones of changes that have made it difficult to reach consumers, of technologies that have changed society, and of the lack of creativity found in the arts. But in a small but impressive microcosm of the universe known as Medeski Martin & Wood, creativity is alive, flourishing, and filled with outlets for growth and expansion. And somewhere, whatever gods of music there might be are smiling. Medeski Martin and Wood's story is - like most great stories - one of humble beginnings, friendship, determination, a happy ending and a very bright future. The trio of keyboard/organ/piano player John Medeski, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood formed not in some vastly creative alternate universe, but rather in the neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, known as D.U.M.B.O
Emma-Jean Thackray: Yellow

by Jim Trageser
Many of the most prominent exponents of melding jazz with soul, funk and hip-hop have been trumpeters. Even in the late 1970s, Chuck Mangione was already taking soul-jazz and moving it further into an R&B orbit (and taking heat from jazz purists for supposedly selling out"), and in so doing exposing lots of pop fans to ...

by AAJ Staff
Doug Collette's pedigree for crafting honest and carefully-considered music analysis lies in a nearly fifty year devotion to contemporary rock and roll, jazz and the blues. Cale Brandley & Triptych Myth and Philip Zoubek

by Maurice Hogue
Master drummer Andrew Cyrille turned 79 in November. His wonderful new recording Lebroba, following on the heels of his acclaimed The Declaration of Musical Independence proves age has little to do with creativity. You'll hear two tracks from the new release which features Bill Frisell and Wadada Leo Smith, another septuagenarian at peak powers.
John Scofield: Combo 66

by Doug Collette
The dignified portraits of John Scofield on the front and back covers of Combo 66 are at once in keeping with the reference to his age in the album's name and at odds with the youthful vigor he and his bandmates exhibit in playing the music inside this subtly eye-catching package of all new material.
What Is Jazz? Vol.1 with Jimmy Mac

by Mr Lob
What is Jazz? Is it freedom, is it tradition, is it alive, does it continue to evolve and thrive or is it an art form stuck in time? I cannot answer any of these questions or even really tell you what Jazz is. I can tell you how it makes me feel, where it takes me ...

Badbadnotgood Is Truly Goodgoodnotbad

by Dave Wayne
Among the pleasantest surprises of 2016, a year replete with many notably unpleasant surprises, was the appearance of IV by the poly-stylistic jazz / instrumental hiphop quartet BadBadNotGood. IV came hot on the heels of Sour Soul, their remarkable 2015 collaboration with Ghostface Killah. If you still bristle when you see the words jazz" and hiphop" ...
