Masabumi Kikuchi: Hanamichi The Final Studio Recording

Read "Hanamichi The Final Studio Recording" reviewed by Pierre Giroux

Masabumi Kikuchi is not the kind of jazz pianist who just strikes the keys to produce a sound. He has a Zen-like approach to the instrument by making it an extension of himself, and thus both constructs and hears the music produced as a different form factor. There are and were other contemporary pianists such as ...

Kresten Osgood Quintet: Kresten Osgood Quintet Plays Jazz

Read "Kresten Osgood Quintet Plays Jazz" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

One way of getting a handle on a jazz artist's style is a perusal of their “played with," “recorded with" resume. Danish drummer Kresten Osgood has collaborated in the recording studio with the likes of pianists Paul Bley and Masabumi Kikuchi, bassist Mark Dresser and saxophonist Sam Rivers--free-flying iconoclasts all. The drummer/bandleader lives up to that ...

The Gil Evans Orchestra: Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1

Read "Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Even though the name Gil Evans has a hallowed ring these days, the late composer / arranger's music remains for many aficionados an acquired taste. On the other hand, while that is the Gil Evans Orchestra performing on Hidden Treasures, Volume 1, the lion's share of the music brought to light isn't his--Evans wrote only two ...

Gil Evans Orchestra: Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1

Read "Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Yoko Miura, Gianni Mimmo: Departure

Read "Departure" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

Read "Déjà Vu" reviewed by Troy Dostert

On her excellent debut record, Déjà Vu, bassist Jeong Lim Yang proves that there's more than one way to make a first impression on a listener. Rather than taking the obvious route with up-tempo workouts or deviously complex compositions, Yang is content to carve out plenty of open space for her music to breathe. Her graceful ...
