Marco Chelo
Born:
Marco Chelo was born in Milan and raised in Rome.He moved to New York in 1995, where he performs and teaches saxophone. In addition to studying with Joe Solomon ( Lenny Tristano student) and Mike Longo ( Dizzy Gillespies' Musical Director), Marco has been tutored in contemporary music by David Keberle, professor of composition and music theory at the American University in Washington, D.C., and in jazz improvisation by Dr. Barry Harris, Clifford Jordan, and David Gross,and Marc Mommaas among others. In addition to playing sax Marco studies African drums, counterpoint, and composition. In 2009 Marc Mommaas and Marco Chelo founded the New York Jazz Workshop, an organization dedicated to promoting affordable jazz education in New York City. Marco has recorded 2 CD to date, the first one in 2009 a jazz album with the group "Il Collettivo" and the second in 2011 a collaboration with the Malian griot and songwriter Makane Kouyate and the Band Denbaya.
