Mankwe Ndosi is celebrated for a sound and practice that spans genres and disciplines: celebrating influences from Jazz and African legacies, Hip Hop and Soul, performance art, theater, public art and improvisation. Favourite Recordings from 2021

by Maurice Hogue
As per usual, the first One Man's Jazz of a new year features music from my favourite recordings of the previous year, selected from a wide range of artists from 38 countries. I thought 2021 was a fine year for releasing some very good creative music, despite the dire effect of the pandemic on the rest ...
Paula Shocron, Nendo Dango & Steven Bernstein

by Maurice Hogue
Following up on music by Argentinean pianist, Paula Shocron, led me to Nendo Dango Records, the Buenos Aires label run by Shocron and her partner, drummer Pablo Diaz. This episode features very forward-thinking music from several Nendo Dango releases. There's also more piano from a new recording by Australian Alister Spence and Japan's Satoko Fujii. Their ...

Here's another of those almost-all-music editions of One Man's Jazz, with just an intro at the top of each hour. The music includes samplings from new releases by Portuguese drummer/percussionist Pedro Melo Alves & his Ominiae Large Ensemble, bassists Juan Bayon from Buenos Aires and Tomo Jacobson from Copenhagen, and several saxophonists: James Brandon Lewis Nick ...
The Claudia Quintet, Shay Hazan & John Coltrane

by Maurice Hogue
This episode is packed with music from some terrific new releases: Israeli bassist Shay Hazan & Quintet, The Claudia Quintet, new trio Ember, Strange Attractors from Toronto, the powerful Irreversible Entanglements, Wood Organization from Denmark, saxophonist Rodney Chapman, Jonah Rosenberg's Fabulous Trio, and Chicago drummer Charles Rumback. The closer comes from South African's very talented Malcolm ...
Mankwe Ndosi, Marc Johnson & Damien Kingston

by Maurice Hogue
Mankwe Ndosi is not a singer (more like a true vocal artist!!!) that was familiar to me, but she certainly is now. Her recording Felt/Not Said is strikingly different. She's from Minneapolis, not that far from Chicago, the home of the AACM, and that's where Ndosi set out to incorporate AACM influences to her African roots ...
