He studied under the direction of Janusz Gabryjelski, who not only taught Luke trombone but also music theory and aural skills. Before moving to the United States in 1994 he had already performed throughout Poland, Germany and Belgium with a youth concert band (Młodzieżowa Orkiestra Dęta Zespołu Szkół Elektrycznych).
