In 1992, he continued his music education at London’s Guildhall School of Music, studying under former Jazz Messenger, Jean Toussaint. From the moment he joined the London jazz circuit, Denys displayed extraordinary talent, energy and commitment. Spotted by veteran Jazz Warriors double bassist, Gary Crosby at the bassist’s regular Tomorrow’s Warriors jam sessions, Denys was immediately invited to join Crosby’s new band, Nu Troop

Paul Dunmall

Born: May 6, 1953

After turning professional at seventeen and touring Europe for one year with progressive rock group Marsupilami he moved to America and lived there for three years playing with many musicians including Alice Coltrane and toured with Johnny Guitar Watson for one year. On his return to the UK he worked with folk musicians Polly Bolton/Kevin Dempsey and groupings worked around the Dando Shaft band. In 1979 he became a founder member of the jazz group Spirit Level with pianist Tim Richards plus playing free improvised music with the Nigel Morris trio. At this time also Paul played in the London Improvised music scene. In 1985 the group Tenor Tonic was formed with Alan Skidmore, Tony Levin and Paul Rogers

John Butcher

Born: October 25, 1954

John Butcher's work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. Originally a physicist, he left academia in '82, and has since collaborated with hundreds of musicians - Derek Bailey, John Tilbury, John Stevens, The EX, Gerry Hemingway, Akio Suzuki, Polwechsel, Gino Robair, Rhodri Davies, Fred Frith, Okkyung Lee, John Edwards, Keiji Haino, Paul Lovens, Eddie Prevost, Mark Sanders, Butch Morris, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, Matthew Shipp, Phil Minton, and Andy Moor - to name a few. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of place

Darius Brubeck

Born: June 14, 1947

In 1983, Darius Brubeck introduced the first Jazz Studies degree in Africa and he was the Director of the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music until 2006. He established an international reputation touring with South African musicians. His current bands include The Darius Brubeck Quartet, Gathering Forces and Brubecks Play Brubeck, with his brothers Chris and Dan, which is touring the UK in November/December. Creative highlights include “Commission 2004” (with Zim Ngqawana) for the inaugural season of Jazz at Lincoln Center and this was performed by Wynton Marsalis, Morgan Freeman and Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra

John Russell

Born: December 19, 1954

John Russell got his first guitar in 1965 while living in Kent and began to play in and around London from 1971 onwards. An early involvement with the emerging free improvisation scene (from 1972) followed, seeing him play in such places as The Little Theatre Club, Ronnie Scott’s, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Musicians’ Co-Op and the London Musicians’ Collective. From 1974 his work extended into teaching, broadcasts (radio and television) and touring in the United Kingdom and, ever extensively, in other countries around the world . He has played with many of the world’s leading improvisers and his work can be heard on over 50 CDs. In 1981, he founded QUAQUA, a large bank of improvisers put together in different combinations for specific projects and, in 1991, he started MOPOMOSO which has become the UK’s longest running concert series featuring mainly improvised music.

Iain Ballamy

Born: February 20, 1964

Ballamy established himself playing alongside notables including Hermeto Pascoal, the late Gil Evans, George Coleman, Dewey Redman, Mike Gibbs and the New York Composers Orchestra. Touring extensively world-wide, he has appeared at most international festivals and venues. Ballamy can be heard on over 40 CDs. A long time collaborator with Django Bates, since the days of Loose Tubes and Bill Bruford's Earthworks he is currently a member of Django's 'Human Chain' and 'Delightful Precepice'. Parallel to his international jazz career, Ballamy has pursued his interest in world music, playing concerts in India and Europe with the Karnataka College of Percussion
