Katharine (Katchie) Cartwright


Ethnomusicologist, performer, teacher. Doctorate in music from The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (Ph.D., 1998). Associate professor, Northwest Vista College, San Antonio, Texas. Born in New York City, I have been a New Yorker for much of my adult life, although my idyllic summers and many winters of my youth were spent in the deep woods of Minisink Hills, Pennsylvania. My bassist daughter Eleonore Oppenheim still lives in the city, where she performs with Missy Mazzoli's Victoire and other ensembles, and is pursuing a doctorate in music from The State University of New York at Stony Brook. My San Antonio-based jazz-world group, Katchie & Le Monde Caché ("the hidden world") performs "Great Global Songbook"; a jazz-based mix of modern and antique genres from Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean
