Sari Kessler: Do Right

Read "Do Right" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

In just under five minutes--the running time for producer/percussionist James Shipp's album-opening arrangement of “Walk On By"--Sari Kessler successfully makes the case that jazz singing is her real métier. That particular truth may not have materialized until recent times, as Kessler walked away from a career as a clinical psychologist to pursue a life in music ...

Rob Garcia: Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet

Read "Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planet" reviewed by Franz A. Matzner

A complex amalgam, drummer-composer Rob Garcia's Finding Love in an Oligarchy on a Dying Planetis as densely constructed and provoking as its title. Mike Holober: Balancing Act

Read "Balancing Act" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Conceptualizing and creating music is a delicate balancing act, leaving composers to strive for symmetry between head and heart, reasoning and intuition, and structure and freedom. The lesson was readily honored by Nicky Schrire on her Space and Time (Magenta Label Group, 2013). Vocalist Ashley Daneman also took that message to heart after her study with ...
