Scott Hamilton and Duke Robillard: Swingin' Again

Read "Swingin' Again" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

In 1987, Duke Robillard released the album Swing (Rounder), a successful combination of jazz and jump blues. He got his old friend, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton to help him out with the recording. Although Robillard is primarily known as a blues guitarist, the record made it obvious that jazz is also deeply rooted in his musical ...

Svetlana: Night at the Movies

Read "Night at the Movies" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Russian-American singer-composer Svetlana (she has a last name, Schmulyian, but prefers the monomoniker) is onto something. Her debut recording, Night at the Speakeasy (OA2 Records, 2016) with her self-appointed Delancey Five, was a structured affair which concentrated on the music of the “Jazz Age" (save for the Beach Boys' “God Only Knows") performed in a Jazz ...

Read "Colonic Youth, Andy Farber, Tal Ronen & Paquito D'Rivera" reviewed by Martin Longley

Colonic Youth Trans-Pecos December 22, 2014 In the wintry wasteland, the new-ish Trans-Pecos venue did not seem to boast a particularly peachy set-up. It may or may not still be operated by Todd P, normally known as a promoter of slightly swerved rock outfits, and there were tales of this ...
