by Mark Corroto
Goodbye to 2020 and for the most part good riddance. Unless of course, we are talking about great music. Hopefully, your self isolation bubble had good sounds. Keeping in mind the global pandemic will not end soon, here's a list of my top 18 releases for 2020. I hope they can ease the pain of social ...
Rempis/Parker/Flaten/Cunningham: Stringers & Struts

by Mark Corroto
Imagine if the listener could choose bands or combinations of musicians like a fantasy football game. They would compile discographies and note when certain players crossed paths, or imagine new combinations of dissimilar styles. This is obviously not an original idea because Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis has been drafting varying combinations of talented players for more ...
Ben Monder, Sandy Evans, Andrea Keller, Ralph Alessi & Rich Halley

by Maurice Hogue
Monash University in Melbourne, Australia is the home of the Sir Zelman Cowen School Of Music. It's an excellent program that believes in challenging the students. One of the ways it does that is to bring in internationally recognized artists to perform and work directly with the students. This episode presents some of those Monash sessions. ...
Matt Gold: A Guitarist in Songwriter's Disguise

by Friedrich Kunzmann
Combining improvisational concepts with Americana aesthetics is one thing, but enveloping this blend in a songwriter approach is another story entirely. The first concept is common practice these days, the second however represents the unique character which the up and coming Chicago-based guitarist Matt Gold has to offer on his compelling debut effort, Imagined Sky (Whirlwind ...
Jeremy Cunningham: The Weather Up There

by Jakob Baekgaard
The complex landscape of human emotions is still vastly uncharted, but every true work of art adds a little piece to the puzzle. This can be done in many ways, but it is rare that an album connects emotion with complex layers of memory, interpersonal relations, politics and societal structures. Nevertheless, this is what drummer and ...

Jeremy Cunningham

Born:
Jeremy Cunningham is a drummer, composer, and improviser. Originally from Cincinnati, he moved to Chicago in 2009, where he currently performs and composes as an integral part of the city’s vibrant music scene. As a teenager, Cunningham grew serious about performing music during his time with a jam band called “Ray’s Music Exchange.” There, he learned the intricacies of playing with a large group, and dove headlong into the jazz of the late 60s and early 70s. He holds a Bachelors of Music from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he studied with professor John Von Ohlen, whose zen, loose approach toward drumming continues to inform Cunningham’s technique today
Nick Mazzarella Trio: Counterbalance

by Troy Dostert
Although he is well-accustomed to working in other settings, alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella is perhaps at his strongest in a trio format: specifically, the sax-bass-drums configuration that allows for both maximum harmonic freedom and focused rhythmic interaction. In 2017 his Meridian Trio (featuring bassist Matt Ulery and drummer Jeremy Cunningham) released Triangulum (Clean Feed), an excellent ...
The Eclectic Sounds of ears&eyes

by Jakob Baekgaard
Whereas some record labels try to limit their aesthetic to a certain sound, others take pride in challenging the conventions of genre. Matthew Golombisky, the founder of ears&eyes Records, belongs to the latter category. His philosophy is very clear, as he points out in the label profile that can be read on this site: My motto ...

Those who feel that jazz has run out of steam, that there is nothing new to say, should encounter bassist and renaissance man, Matthew Golombisky, who runs the Chicago-based label ears&eyes. The name says it all. Golombisky is interested in what is going on around him. He is not only curious about music, but also passionate ...
