MUSICIAN Born:

Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne has been both an introspective, cerebral songwriter and a politically attuned voice of conscience. He emerged in the early Seventies as a soul-baring young folksinger whose songs dealt with riddles of romance and existence. In his middle period he became a more extroverted rock and roller. Later work grew more topical in nature as Browne sang of political and social realities within and beyond our borders. “In a way, I don’t choose what I write about - my subjects kind of choose me,” this vanguard singer/songwriter explained in 1993. “It’s a healing thing, a way of confronting what’s important in my life at the time.” Though he was born on a German army base, Browne has lived in Southern California virtually all his life

Stoll Vaughan: Desires Shape

Read "Desires Shape" reviewed by Doug Collette

Stoll Vaughan's profile rose appreciably when he was credited with —and duly lauded for--penning material that appeared on the Allman-Betts Band debut album Down To The River (BMG, 2019). Cryptic as his own album title seems on the surface, there is no lack of clarity in the man's writing nor the spartan production, arrangement and musicianship ...

Younger Brothers: The Allman Joys, Hourglass, Duane & Gregg

Read "Younger Brothers: The Allman Joys, Hourglass, Duane & Gregg" reviewed by Doug Collette

In somewhat belated recognition and celebration of the fifty year anniversary of the formation of the Allman Brothers Band in March of 1969, something of a beehive of activity arose during the first quarter of 2020. Not coincidentally, most of it circles around what used to be one of, if not the most, significant junctures of ...

Jonah Tolchin: Fires From The Cold

Read "Fires From The Cold" reviewed by Doug Collette

Jonah Tolchin's fourth solo album, Fires For The Cold, boasts some notable selling points, but ultimately stands on its own terms as an estimable, if somewhat narrowly circumscribed, piece of work. The vocal contributions of Jackson Browne and Rickie Lee Jones buttress the delicacy of the recording's predominantly acoustic textures, as does the artist's discerning inclusion ...

Gregg Allman: Laid Back Deluxe Edition

Read "Laid Back Deluxe Edition" reviewed by Doug Collette

Gregg Allman's first solo album, Laid Back (Capricorn, 1973), is the ideal candidate for a Deluxe Edition reissue and remaster. Not only is the record an exquisite, one-of-a-kind piece of work in its original form, but the backstory is eminently worth telling as it sheds light not only on the creation of the album itself, but ...

Jackson Browne: Running On Empty: 2019 Remaster

Read "Running On Empty: 2019 Remaster" reviewed by Doug Collette

There is no other album quite like Running On Empty in Jackson Browne's discography. But then, there may be no other album comparable in contemporary rock: it is an absolutely unflinching portrait of an artist looking for a connection to the muse and only fleetingly establishing one. In a sense, this 1977 album resides at the ...

Tal Wilkenfeld: Love Remains

Read "Love Remains" reviewed by Doug Collette

Prior to the release of Love Remains, Australian-born Tal Wilkenfeld may have been best known for her talent on the bass in the company of Jeff Beck circa Live at Ronnie Scott's (Eagle Video, 2008). In the interim, however, she has been busy with stints playing for a disparate range of artists including Jackson Browne and ...

The US Festival 1982: The US Generation

Read "The US Festival 1982: The US Generation" reviewed by Doug Collette

Various Artists The US Festival 1982 MVD Entertainment Group 2018 By title alone, The US Festival of 1982 might seem light years removed from the abiding fascination with festivals now pervading our culture. But if director Glenn Aveni's ninety-minutes plus documentary proves anything, it's that this event founded and sponsored ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
