Shadow Dance

Featuring the music of Jack DeJohnette
Duration: 15:14

Jack DeJohnette was one of the most influential and proficient jazz drummers of all time. He was known especially for his playing with Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett and his own bands and compositions. DeJohnette was named a US National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, the highest honor the United States bestows upon jazz musicians. He passed away on October 26, 2025. Innovative elements of his sound included using the tom-toms as a form of propulsive "ride;" tuning the drums low and in synch so that they strengthened the harmonic role of the kit; and, varying the attack on the cymbals so that they would enrich the feel of hard jazz-rock as well as ballads. Listen to him attack and completely occupy the underlying sonic spectrum of "Shadow Dance," with Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and Dave Holland. DeJohnette’s solo kicks off the song, the band groove is introduced at 02:23, and the head comes at 05:10. Although each performer is outrageously talented, when you turn DeJohnette “up to eleven,” his impact on the song’s drive is clear.

RIP Jack DeJohnette

Read "RIP Jack DeJohnette" reviewed by Frank Housh

The great Jack DeJohnette passed away on October 26, 2025. His epic career is matched only by Miles Davis, whom DeJohnette began playing with in 1969 and later introduced to fusion in 1999's Bitches Brew (Sony Records, 1970). He played with everybody, from Miles to Pat Metheny. One of my favorites was his work ...

Antonio Faraò: Kind of...

Read "Kind of..." reviewed by Artur Moral

Antonio Faraò may seem a restless spirit, always on the move--a musical entity gifted with an innate, perpetual acceleration. But for certain decisions, he clearly takes his time: over eight years ago, in an interview aptly titled Antonio Faraò, l'eklektiko, the Rome-born pianist and composer--already in his fifties-- declared his interest in tackling a solo piano ...

Lost and Found, Part 1: historic jazz discoveries

Read "Lost and Found, Part 1: historic jazz discoveries" reviewed by Larry Slater

Archaeology is the study of the ancient and recent human past through material remains. The same might be said of distant and recent jazz recordings that have been discovered. Sometimes jazz archeologists find these rarities in the archives of defunct record labels, or buried unmarked at the vast Library of Congress. Several were in the hands ...
