Born:
Pi Recordings is proud to release Tactiles, the second album by Liberty Ellman, one of New York's most imaginative and unorthodox guitarist/composers. Tactiles follows up the critically acclaimed Orthodoxy, which Ellman released in 1998 on his own Red Giant label. Featuring Mark Shim on tenor saxophone, Stephan Crump on bass, and Eric Harland on drums, Tactiles documents sounds and concepts that have been gestating since Ellman returned to his native New York from the Bay Area in 1998. Tactiles is Ellman's second appearance on Seth Rosner's innovative Pi label - the first being Up Popped the Two Lips by Henry Threadgill's acoustic band ZOOID

Laurent Medelgi
Born:
Hailing from Paris, Laurent picked up the guitar at age 12. After a solid year of Classical training, his wantingness to improvise drove him to play Rock Music. Although just a teenager, his adventurous spirit brought him across the Channel to explore the U.K.s burgeoning New Wave/Rock Scene, where he immediately formed a band and started performing in London and its outlying area. While playing out at night, his days were spent recording and producing with the likes of Keyboardist David Greenfield (The Stranglers) and Saxophonist Kevin Flanagan (Pinkfloyd). Three years later, Laurent is back in Paris performing Club dates in his native city and along the French Riviera. Setting foot in New York in the fall of 1993, Medelgi quickly becomes accustomed to the Citys fast-paced music scene

Born:
"BAIL!" is my first album, recorded in late 1999 to document my compositions and my ensemble work with San Diego bassist Bruce Grafrath. Subsequently, I collaborated with Bronx-born Swiss resident Edmund J. Wood on a series of experimental open improvisations, featuring Edmund on fretless bass and implied-time drum loops and me on hollow-body electric guitar. Unfortunately, the world lost a great creative soul when Edmund died in March, 2002. My most recent creative cohorts are LA-based musicians Dan Krimm, electric bassist, and Steve Sykes, with whom I've worked on trio interpretations of my compositions
