Alcuni di questi omaggi provengono da musicisti italiani, come quelli di cui ci siamo recentemente occupati di ...

A Lousy Day in Harlem is a great day for jazz with The Ed Palermo Big Band! Available now!

A Lousy Day in Harlem is a great day for jazz with The Ed Palermo Big Band, as the band known for reinventing the music of Frank Zappa turns its attention to a riveting program of Monk, Coltrane, Ellington, and hard-swinging originals, confirming Ed Palermo’s place in jazz’s top ranks of contemporary big band arrangers. Musician

Ed Palermo

Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists.

Gil Evans wonderfully articulated Palermo’s unusual approach to traditional instrumentation:

“I first heard Ed Palermo’s music in a small club in the SoHo section of Manhattan. He was using the instrumentation of a traditional big band yet his arrangements and songs were anything but that. When I thought the music was going a certain direction, it would suddenly turn a corner. Ed has the ability to keep that important balance between cohesiveness and unpredictability. Ed Palermo’s music is alive and represents now.”

Read "Michael Mwenso, Uri Caine, Nérija, Tenor Triage & Other New Releases" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Two hours of genre-defying, global, high-octane, music, with a special focus on socially engaged projects, Finnish bands, and charismatic artists whose music has a higher than average density of ideas, like Michael Mwenso and Frank Zappa (by way of the tribute paid to him by the Orchestre Franck Tortiller. It all starts with the much anticipated ...

Mu: Free Energy!

Read "Free Energy!" reviewed by Geno Thackara

The Greek letter mu is used in physics notation to represent the coefficient of friction--and accordingly, this wacky and brainy crew could have hardly chosen a more relatable handle. The name seems to conflict with inventor Nikola Tesla's famous concept of free (i.e. all-natural) energy, but the clash is pretty apt for Free Energy!, which revels ...

Mike Westbrook Orchestra: Catania

Read "Catania" reviewed by Ian Patterson

A major figure in British jazz since the late 1950s, composer-pianist Mike Westbrook continues to write, perform and record at a rate of knots which would leave contenders half his 83 years on the ropes. Four albums since 2016, including--after a gap of forty years—not one but two solo piano recordings, are testament to the creative ...
