Jeff Cosgrove/Matthew Shipp/William Parker: Near Disaster

by Mark Corroto
March 1, 2019

Is there such a phenomenon as free will? Most of us would like to think so. But consider for a moment, that every thought, decision, and action you make is a product of your DNA and the sum total of all your experiences. Sure, you make choices, but do you really have self-rule to over that ...

Thelonious Monk Revisited

by Ludovico Granvassu

Thelonious Monk once said “play what you want and let the public pick up on what you are doing even if it does take them 15, 20 years." Luckily, he lived long enough to become fully embraced and celebrated before his passing. However, it's after his death that his music has really become central to the ...

December 26, 2018

2018 was another year with too many favorites to choose from. I'm struck by the number of “extended ensembles" on my list: groups of eight or more, including a chamber orchestra plus jazz group. It was also an exceptionally good year for RareNoiseRecords, making it hard for me to stop at three albums. This list is ...

Pianist Frank Kimbrough's similarly comprehensive set is ...

Frank Kimbrough: Monk's Dreams: The Complete Compositions of Thelonious Sphere Monk

by Victor L. Schermer
November 27, 2018

Thelonious Monk, though controversial in his time, was a brilliant, innovative pianist and composer with a unique way of conceiving the music that was yet remarkably simpatico with standard forms. Many of his compositions (they are much more than “tunes," though I'll use that word here as shorthand) have become a regular part of the jazz ...
