Magnus Pires
Magnus Pires is a Brazilian flutist, born in July 8th, 1948 in Manaus, Amazon, but living in Rio de Janeiro since 1950. His mother was a professional crooner in the fifties and his aunt played guitar and sung in an all woman trio. Magnus is also a composer and arranger. He started his career as a classical flute player, playing in the Rio de Janeiro Federal University Orchestra. But being jazz his primary interest Magnus switched definitively its goals toward the Jazz/Samba direction. Gareth Lockrane

Gareth Lockrane started playing at the age of 10 and after raiding his dad's record collection discovered jazz at 14. Early influences included Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans and Stan Getz on the jazz side whilst also being transfixed by the great blues-rock guitarists of the 60s and 70s as a child - Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy continue to be major influences. On flute the initial main inspirations were saxophone "doublers" like Frank Wess, James Clay, Roland Kirk, Bobby Jaspar and James Moody and later on he fell under the spell of flute visionaries like Jeremy Steig, Eric Dolphy, Hubert Laws, Paul Horn, Eddie Parker and James Newton amongst many others

Matt Samolis.

Matt Samolis has been working in sonic and visual mediums since 1987. He began studying flute, and later composition and tenor banjo. He has worked with ensembles at New England Conservatory, Brandeis University, Berklee, and Tufts, as well as Open Hand Theatre, Pilgrim Research Collaborative, Mobius, Roy Hart Theatre, and numerous other projects. Currently, his primary focus is as a composer, and as flutist with various local performance groups and his drone alliance, The Metal & Glass Ensemble. Julee Avallone

Julee Avallone began playing flute at age 7, guided and encouraged by an artistic family, and soon dreamed of playing in orchestras. She learned other instruments while specializing to earn her Bachelors in Flute Performance at Arizona State University. After returning to New England she completed her Masters degree in Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory. Anne Drummond

Flutist, pianist, and composer Anne Drummond practices and teaches improvisational music. She has been performing internationally since 1997, and as of 2006, began writing for various chamber groups receiving critical acclamation in North America and Europe. Of late she performs frequently with her spirited sextet co-led with Lew Soloff. Drummond has a strong research interest in the cognitive neuroscience of music, particularly improvisation. Currently she collaborates with researchers in cognitive neuroscience to study the effects of musical improvisation on the brain, and is interested in the biological basis of creativity and in relationship between music education and neuroplasticity. Louisa West
Born:
Louisa West was born in Thomasville, Georgia in 1979 and began playing flute at the age of ten. Louisa holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Georgia. While studying there, she performed in numerous ensembles, including an orchestra conducted by the legendary Sammy Nestico. She studied privately with highly acclaimed classical flutists, including Angela Jones-Reus, William Bennett, Mary Karen Clardy, and Mimi Stillman, as well as jazz flutists Nestor Torres and Holly Hofmann. She has been a winner of a number of competitions, including the Florida Flute Association Young Artist Competition in 1999 and the 2009 National Flute Association Jazz Master Class Competition with Lew Tabachin

Jayna Nelson

Born:
Jayna Nelson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and began to study piano as soon as she could reach the keyboard. At age 9 she began to study the flute as well and by age 17 had won both the Baldwin Junior Keyboard award and the l Music Teachers' National Association Competition. She graduated from the University of Toronto in Flute Performance where she studied with Louis Moyse, Andre Jaunet and Jeanne Baxtresser. For the next two years, she served on the faculty at University of Toronto teaching chamber music. There she also premiered a work by Mario Davidovsky: Synchronism #1 for Flute & Electronic Tape under the direction of the composer
