Fergus Quill: Up Down

Read "Fergus Quill: Up Down" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

A few years back, British bassist Fergus Quill discovered the music of Xero Slingsby, the larger-than-life saxophonist who passed away in 1988 at the age of 30. Though his career was short, Slingsby left an indelible mark on anyone fortunate enough to hear him and continues to enjoy cult status among a devoted few.

I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu

Read "I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2024

Read "Ludovico Granvassu's Garden of Jazzy Delights 2024" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Have you noticed how many “best of the year" listicles start with an apologetic preamble ("these are not necessarily 'the best albums of the year' but 'my favorites';" “it's all subjective;" “tomorrow I might have chosen different titles;" “I could only select ten albums" etc.)? Those disclaimers channel the writer's discomfort of having to summarize a ...

Fire! Orchestra, Ralph Alessi, Ron Caines & Karl Evangelista

Read "Fire! Orchestra, Ralph Alessi, Ron Caines & Karl Evangelista" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Putting this episode together was a most enjoyable time; there was so much to choose out of a whack of new releases with a few “memories" too. On the new release side, you'll hear music from The Netherlands (saxophonist Hristo Goleminov, guitarist Ella Zirina and Tale Tellers From A Timeless Tribe), English free jazz saxophonist Ron ...

This show is the 1,300th edition of One Man's Jazz since it debuted back in May 1999 one sunny Saturday afternoon in the studios of CKUW FM in Winnipeg. How the content has changed since then! More avant-garde, more international players, more intense, but still a joy to put together. Ordinarily I would have done some ...

An energetic episode this time around on One Man's Jazz! There's plenty of punch from South African drummer and composer Asher Gamedze, trombonist Steve Swell's Fire Into Music (featuring the late Jemeel Moondoc), L.A. trumpeter Dan Rosenboom with a killer band, New Zealand mates drummer Edward Ware and saxophonist Jeff Henderson reunion, the quirky Imaginary Big ...

Many jazz musicians in Poland consider playing and/or recording the music of Poland's father of jazz, Krzysztof Komeda, a rite of passage. A similar feeling exists with most jazz musicians anywhere about the music of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and more. This episode features some recordings that follow that path. Saxophonist Dan Willis tackles ...
