Isrea Butler: Congo Lament

by Jack Bowers
October 13, 2024

After decades gigging as a sideman with some of the USA's most renowned big bands, trombonist Isrea Butler has finally recorded his debut album, Congo Lament, inviting tenor saxophonist and celebrated Count Basie Orchestra soloist Doug Lawrence to share the front line in his quintet. All but one of the album's seven numbers ...

Count Basie: Late Night Basie

by Jack Bowers
July 28, 2023

Late Night Basie: great idea. Three tracks by the Basie Orchestra and four by other assorted groups: not-so-great idea. Enlisting Jazzmeia Horn to scat on the Basie classic “One O'Clock Jump": rather pointless. Compressing seven numbers (eight, actually) into a meager twenty-four--or perhaps more like twenty-eight--minutes (including a “bonus" track): head-scratching. Mind you, the other ensembles ...

Mike Allen: To a Star

by Jack Bowers
May 1, 2023

If you're a tenor saxophonist leading a piano-less trio, much of the group's melodic and harmonic components rest squarely on your shoulders. In spite of that--or perhaps because of it--Canadian tenor Mike Allen says he prefers working within that framework, as he has been doing for many years. If that is one's choice, ...

Doug Lawrence: Doug Lawrence & Friends

by Jack Bowers
December 11, 2021

If the name Doug Lawrence doesn't sound familiar, the name Count Basie surely should. What is the Lawrence- Basie connection? Well, for more than two decades Lawrence has been the featured tenor saxophone soloist with the renowned and still- active Count Basie Orchestra, a chair once impressively occupied by the likes of Lester Young, Eddie “Lockjaw" ...

by Patricia Myers

Count Basie Orchestra Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Scottsdale, Arizona December 19, 2015 The Count Basie Orchestra solidified its 80-year reputation for strong swingability, inventive solo segments and supreme section cohesion during two back-to-back concerts on a tour in support of the band's first-ever Christmas-theme album. But those seasonal charts ...

Buddy Rich: The Beat Goes On

by Jack Bowers
June 11, 2014

Was Buddy Rich really “the world's greatest drummer"? The answer to that speculative question is debatable, of course, and opinions may vary, as they no doubt do on what kind of a person (or persons) he was when not weaving his particular brand of magic behind a drum kit. Buddy's remarkable talents as a drummer and ...

Caution: Brief Column Ahead...

by Jack Bowers
June 4, 2012

This may be one of the shortest columns I've written in fourteen-plus years at All About Jazz. The fact is, not much has happened this month in our little corner of big band jazz, and there is almost nothing to report. About all we can do is look forward to events on the horizon: Jazz Under ...
