Don Ellis
Born:
Before his untimely death in 1978 at the young age of 44, Don Ellis was one of the most creative and innovative jazz musicians of all time. In a career span of less than 25 years, Don Ellis distinguished himself as a trumpeter, drummer, composer, arranger, recording artist, author, music critic, and music educator. However, Don Ellis is probably best remembered for his work as a big band leader. His orchestra, which was active from 1966-78, achieved enormous popular appeal at a time when the influence of big band music was noticeably fading. Ellis's significance lies in his use of groundbreaking musical techniques and devices, new to the world of jazz
Adam Meckler: Magnificent Madness
by Angelo Leonardi
The CCM Jazz Orchestra feat. Steven Bernstein: Nobody Does It Better
by Angelo Leonardi
John Beasley: Monk'estra, Vol. 2
by Angelo Leonardi

Albert Mangelsdorff: Albert Mangelsdorff And His Friends
by Dan Bilawsky
The afterlife for Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's storied MPS Records has been tough to track. After Brunner-Schwer sold the rights to Philips in the early '80s, the label changed hands several times--Polydor picked it up and passed it through a subsidiary, Universal Music Group acquired its holdings, Speakers Corner Records took over on the vinyl side of ...
The Brett Gold New York Jazz Orchestra: Dreaming Big
by Jack Bowers
What's that you say? A New York-based Jazz Orchestra as admirable as this one whose recording debut was delayed for more than twenty-five years? There ought to be a law! Well, in this case it wasn't the law but a lawyer who sidetracked the orchestra's debut for so many years. His name is Brett Gold, and ...
Rick Hirsch's Big Ol' Band: Pocono Git-Down
by Richard J Salvucci
Years ago, in liner notes forgotten somewhere, Phil Woods said, There are good players everywhere. You don't have to go to New York to find them," or words to that effect. I was reminded of that observation listening to Rick Hirsch's . It is composed of players from Central Pennsylvania, with Hirsch himself in State College. ...
