Adam Meckler: Magnificent Madness

Non so se Minneapolis è considerata "provincia" nel vasto territorio statunitense (nel campo del jazz certamente si, rispetto ai poli storici di New York, Los Angeles e Chicago) ma spesso dalla provincia giungono alte prove di creatività. Il trombettista, educatore e bandleader Adam Meckler deve ancora trovare ampi riconoscimenti ma il suo debutto orchestrale del 2014 (When The Clouds Look Like This) e un paio di lavori in quintetto hanno evidenziato le sue doti di fantasioso solista e orchestratore. Come fanno fede i numerosi video su You Tube, il suo look personale è oggi più à la page rispetto a qualche anno fa e sembra riflettere i variopinti mutamenti orchestrali del nuovo lavoro. Ci viene in mente l'abbigliamento di Don Ellis nella seconda metà dei sessanta e di Gil Evans quando varò l'orchestra elettrica.
Magnificent Madness non è solo un raffinato lavoro orchestrale ma gioca con le musiche della modernità in modo eccentrico quasi a voler seguire, in un'ottica nuova, la scia dei due grandi bandleader citati.

Con la produzione di JC Sanford e facendo tesoro di varie collaborazioni passate con protagonisti della black popular music, dal R&B al rap, Meckler guida la sua big band su un repertorio di sette nuovi brani. Dopo i variopinti percorsi tra funk storico e Maria Schneider del tema d'apertura e l'elegante modern mainstream di "Let's Live," il clima si fa torrido nella versione live, caratterizzata dai rapper Harjinder e J.D. Steele e dalle vibranti sottolineature orchestrali.
Il percorso musicale prosegue alternando pregevoli orchestrazioni nel segno della tradizione ("Jennsong," in omaggio alla trombonista Jennifer Werner), variopinte fusioni stilistiche ("Fall Leaves and Apple Trees") e vibranti incursioni nell' hip-hop e nel funk ("Our Death Under Your Pillow" e "The Tao of Heavy D"). Meckler dà ulteriore prova del suo valore strumentale con ottimi assoli nel corso dei brani, lasciando il finale al magistrale intervento di Rex Richardson
