Keune Lash Noble: And Now

by John Eyles
The trio of German saxophonist Stefan Keune with British bassist Dominic Lash and drummer Steve Noble first came together in September 2013 when they appeared at guitarist John Russell's monthly Mopomoso afternoon at The Vortex, Keune having been a regular visitor there through his duo with Russell which dates back to the 90's. The trio worked ...

Dominic Lash

Born:
Dominic Lash is a freely improvising double bassist and (more recently) guitarist, although his activities also range much more widely. He first became known internationally for his work with The Convergence Quartet (with Taylor Ho Bynum, Harris Eisenstadt and Alexander Hawkins). He has performed with musicians such as Tony Conrad, Joe Morris, Evan Parker and Steve Reid. Currently based in Cambridge, his most regular collaborators include John Butcher, Angharad Davies, Matthew Grigg, Emil Karlsen, N.O. Moore, Heather Roche, Mark Sanders, Pat Thomas and Alex Ward. He has a longstanding interest in the music of Anthony Braxton, and is a member of Pat Thomas's group The Locals (recasting Braxton's music in funk style) as well as leading his own explorations of Braxton's music with the quintet Kelvin (with Charlotte Keeffe, Andrew Lisle, Heather Roche, and Huw Williams).
Favourite Releases of 2019

by Maurice Hogue
This episode features some of my favourite recordings released in 2019, chosen from a year of some pretty damn fine music. It always seems that I tend toward bassist-led sessions, and that's the case again, with great recordings from Carlos Bica, Torbjorn Zetterberg and the Miles Perkin Quartet for starters. As well, more women artists appear ...
Dave Sewelson, Satoko Fujii and Tatsuya Yoshida & More

by Maurice Hogue
There's a definite theme of muscular sounding saxophone in this edition of One Man's Jazz: Dave Sewelson, Steve Baczkowski, Chris Pitsiokos, Massimo Magee, Tomasz Szukalski, Marty Ehrlich, Cene Resnik, David Leon, Jonas Kullhammar and Remy Alvarez can all skronk with the best of them, and they're somewhere blowing their reeds apart throughout the music in this ...
Avram Fefer, Harris Eisenstadt, Satoko Fujii & Joe Fonda and More

by Maurice Hogue
You can always count on Clean Feed Records for great music, and this episode features some tunes from recent releases on the Portuguese label's catalogue. Saxophonist Avram Fefer adds Marc Ribot to his usual trio and the results on Testament are fantastic. Pianist Zack Clarke steps back to a traditional piano trio format, but the music ...
Junius Paul, Alexandra Grimal & Fay Victor

by Maurice Hogue
The concert tapes for the recent release of Sun Ra & The Arkestra recorded live in Poland in 1986 were sitting in a dusty basement in Kalisz, Poland all this time. Now recovered and mastered to today's standards, there's a worthy addition to Sun Ra's voluminous discography. On this week's show you'll hear a pair of ...
Lisa Hoppe, Sorey & Crispell, Gebhard Ullman and More

by Maurice Hogue
This episode is very wide-ranging in styles and sounds; the boundaries keep expanding. I was very impressed with bassist Lisa Hoppe's new trio, Third Reality, with saxophonist David Leon and guitarist Tal Yahalom. Very original stuff! It's on a German labelJazzhausmusikso do some digging to find it. It's well worth the effort. Drummer, composer and influencer ...
Denman Maroney: Solo @70

by Karl Ackermann
Denman Maroney, best-known for his use of the dual-keyboard hyper piano, celebrates his seventieth birthday with a massive collection of solo pieces played on the traditional piano. However, there is little traditional about Solo@70. Maroney's sizable catalog of over forty releases includes several solo projects; the previous such album, Domicil Solo (Live) (Self Produced, 2017) consisting ...
Stray: Into Darkness

by John Sharpe
Two old masters and two younger pretenders unite to produce Into Darkness. Saxophonist John Butcher and guitarist John Russell were both part of the so-called second generation of improvisers, following in the wake of progenitors such as Evan Parker, Derek Bailey and John Stevens. Joining them in a continuous 51-minute live performance from London's Iklektic in ...
