David Giesel

Born:

David Giesel is a German drummer, composer and bandleader from Basel who works mainly in the fields of jazz, pop and improvised music. The unmistakable characteristics of his sound are the clarity, the dynamic spectrum, followed by the urge to constantly rediscover himself without losing the focus on the music.

David Giesel grew up near Freiburg and completed his bachelor's degree in 2023 at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts. He studied with Eckhard Stromer, Fabian Arends, Rainer Tempel and Alexander "Sandi" Kuhn.

David Giesel released his first albums as a sideman with the "Lukas Wögler Quartett" (Alba, Plastic Jazz), the "Simon Bremen Quartett" (Reflections on Predictability, Unit Records) and others. In 2021 he received the "BMBF Deutschlandstipendium" and found the band "Larceny" with which he released the EP "Shapes" 2022 and the album "Crosscurrent" (2023) on "XJAZZ!MUSIC" Berlin.

Read "Crosscurrent" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Crosscurrent is 22 year-old tenor saxophonist/composer Chase Baird's debut as a leader. These are the basic facts, but they fail to convey anything meaningful about the music to be found here. Crosscurrent doesn't sound like a debut album: Baird's sax playing doesn't sound like it comes from a 22 year-old. This is a beautifully assured recording, ...

Crosscurrent: Rituals

Read "Rituals" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

However, the first piece, “Intersections” incorporates a motif that rings of the 80’s Pat Metheny songbook, due ...
