Miles Okazaki: Trickster

Read "Trickster" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Guitarist Miles Okazaki (Steve Coleman, Dan Weiss) is a meticulous artist and visionary partly due to his thorny and geometrically inclined theme-building practices. With ECM recording artist Craig Taborn sharing the frontline, the guitarist often makes complex storylines sound effortless by design, paralleled by the quartet's symmetrical pulses and deterministic gait. The band also gels to ...

Craig Taborn: Daylight Ghosts

Read "Daylight Ghosts" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Misterioso. E imperscrutabile.

Craig Taborn: Daylight Ghosts

Read "Daylight Ghosts" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

In addition to his copious sideman work (including multiple recordings with James Carter, Roscoe Mitchell, Tim Berne, Michael Formanek, and Chris Potter, among many others) pianist/keyboardist Craig Taborn has found time to record intermittently as a leader since 1994's Craig Taborn Trio (IDW). This is his third ECM album, following the solo Avenging Angel (2011) and ...

Mats Gustafsson & Craig Taborn: Ljubljana

Read "Ljubljana" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Congratulations to whomever conceived of this pairing of two improvised music giants. Pianist Craig Taborn and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, both born in the great white north (so to speak), Taborn in Minneapolis and Gustafsson, Umeå, in Northern Sweden. Both are original and distinctive improvisers whose paths had never crossed until the 2015 Ljubljana Jazz Festival.

Craig Taborn: Daylight Ghosts

Read "Daylight Ghosts" reviewed by Troy Dostert

In addition to his eighty-plus appearances as a sideman, pianist Craig Taborn has during the last six years found a happy home for his own music on the ECM label, where he's been able to establish a formidable body of work in just a few recordings. It makes sense, really, that after his solo record Avenging ...

ECM Showcase at NYC Winter Jazzfest 2017 Tishman Auditorium, The New School New York City January 7, 2017 Music has been a comfort in troubling times ever since there were humans to bring about troubles to begin with. Rare, however, is that music which seeks not only to placate but also ...

Anna Webber's Simple Trio with Matt Mitchell & John Hollenbeck: Binary

Read "Binary" reviewed by John Sharpe

If there were a prize for avoiding the obvious, then Brooklyn-based Canadian saxophonist and flautist Anna Webber would be a prime contender. In an effort to take the road less travelled, Webber has used internet-sourced inspiration, including a random binary digit generator, a website that turns words into drumbeats, and even her own IP address, to ...

2016: An Ivo Perelman Marathon

Read "2016: An Ivo Perelman Marathon" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The original marathoner, Pheidippides in 490 BC, is believed to have run from Marathon, where a battle was being fought, to Athens to inform an assembly that the Persians had been defeated. It certainly was quite the achievement, taking into account the sorry state of footwear at the time and lack of prepackaged gels and energy ...
