Maxine Troglauer

For bass trombonist Maxine Troglauer, born in Wiesbaden in 1995, classical, jazz and contemporary music are not distinct genres that need to be separated from one another. Instead, they are organically connected resonance chambers that allow her to confidently engage with the past. She does this on an instrument whose restrained supporting role as the deep voice in the background of orchestras and big bands seemed strictly defined until now: the bass trombone.

Described by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as a "born virtuoso who effortlessly makes the seemingly impossible possible", Troglauer succeeds in transforming her instrument into a cornucopia of unheard-of expressive diversity. Troglauer, who took up the tenor trombone at the age of six before switching to the bass trombone at 13, does not think in clichés. Instead, she recognises opportunities.
