Tom Haines

Tom Haines is a UK-based composer and musician specialising in original Jazz composition, bespoke composition and sound design for Dance & Media, and music performance (drums, cajon, keyboards, melodica). A multi-award-winning Jazz Composer / Arranger, Tom won the 4th Annual European Big Band Composer Competition with his work 'Elegantly Ella' (2017), the 28th Barga Jazz Composition Award for his work 'Yitzoid' (2015), the inaugural ‘Eddie Harvey Jazz Arranging Award’ (2014) for his work ‘Mystery Dog (Mr E Dog)’, whilst ‘Whistleblower’ landed him the prestigious accolades of the ‘Duvel Jazz Award’ as well as the ‘Bose Audience Prize’ at the Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest (2013). His debut album 'Tom Haines - The Birmingham Jazz Orchestra - Live' is released on 2nd June 2017. Tom has also had works performed by Fukuda-Gumi (Japan), The El Camino College Jazz Orchestra (USA), The Pagsberg Big Band & The Vocals (Denmark), Barga Jazz Orchestra (Italy), the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (UK), Brussels Jazz Orchestra (Belgium), Walsall Jazz Orchestra (UK).

Dwight Jenkins is a composer and electric bass musician. Growing up in a talented musical family meant that Dwight was always surrounded by different forms of music. His father was a tenor saxophone player with various bands. His parents exposed him to a wealth of music as a child, all of which influenced his development. His first venture into learning an instrument himself came when he started to play the drums in grade school. Later while in the 4th grade, he switched from the drums to playing trumpet, and then picking up a guitar at the age of 12. Brett Gold

Brett Gold has pursued an unusual path to his first big band recording with The Brett Gold New York Jazz Orchestra, Dreaming Big, released on GoldFox Records and available June 16, 2017, on CD Baby, Amazon and iTunes.   Born in 1956 and raised in Pikesville, MD, a suburb of Baltimore, Brett began studying trombone in elementary school, and quickly reached a level of proficiency that enabled him to play with a hand-selected nationwide student orchestra at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center.  But his life changed forever when he discovered the music of Charlie Parker and the world of jazz. Taking the advice of his trombone teacher, who suggested to Brett that if there was anything else he could possibly do in life he should not become a musician, Brett finished high school a year early and attended the University of Rochester as a double major in History and Film Studies, graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa

The University of Toronto 12TET

The University of Toronto 12tet is a contemporary ensemble comprised of students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate programs. Since its creation in 2012, the ensemble has established itself as a vehicle for elite players and composers in the jazz performance program and beyond. The band has been featured many times at the Rex Hotel and U of T’s Walter Hall with guests who rank among Canada’s most prominent jazz musicians. Guest soloists include Ralph Alessi, Jim Lewis and Chase Sanborn and Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets). The 12tet has recorded and released 2 full-length CDs featuring original compositions and arrangements by U of T students and Faculty: Rebirth in 2013, and Trillium Falls in 2016. Smaller than a traditional big band, the 12-piece format allows more freedom for soloists while still offering a wide range of ensemble textures

Piotr Scholz Ph.D. (born 1991) is a guitarist, composer and conductor. He is also a winner of many prominent awards, such as Grand Prix of Jazz and Odrą Festival, Grand Prix of Lotos Jazz Festival, 17th Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa, Grand Prix of Jazz Fruit on Mladi Ladi Jazz Festival in Prague, Grand Prix on 18th National Contest of Jazz and Blues Bands, Grand Prix on Blue Note Competition, 1st and 3rd place on International Jazz Composition Contest during Silesian Jazz Festival as well as Grand Prize and Special Prize (Special Mentioned) on 2nd ISAC International Popular Music Composition Competition. Has been honoured with many prestigious awards, such as The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Award, The Ministry of Science and Higher Education Grant Programme, Artistic Grant Programme from City of Poznań and Young Poland Grant Programme. Jim Olsen has been a professional composer/arranger and performer on flute and saxophone for over 30 years. His jazz compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by (among others) trumpeters Bobby Shew and Jim Rotondi, saxophonist Dick Oatts, pianist Michael Weiss, the Eastman School of Music, Kansas University, University of Denver, Indiana University and Oregon jazz ensembles. Olsen served as the music director for the Swing Shift Jazz Orchestra, a Eugene big band, for 15 years. During his tenure with the band he conducted for and performed with such notable artists as pianists Michael Weiss and Kenny Drew, Jr., drummer Jeff Hamilton and trombonists Michael Davis and Andy Martin, as well as Shew, Rotondi and Oatts

He has written for big band, concert band, jazz combos, steel drums, vocal groups, small wind groups, and solo instruments. His music spans a variety of styles, from stride piano to bebop, to third-stream and contemporary, and mixing these to create a polystylistic sound. He studied composition and philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Massachusetts.
