Christian Artmann
Born:
Called a “composer with great vision” (All About Jazz) and a “flute virtuoso” (The Boston Globe) and praised for his “stunning virtuosity” (JazzTimes) and “most beautiful, pure sound” (JazzThetik), flutist / composer and Sunnyside recording artist Christian Artmann is passionate about conveying “a perspective beyond boundaries” (All About Jazz). While deeply centered in contemporary jazz, Artmann’s compositions reflect his roots in European classical and folk music, his love of Brazilian music and prog rock, his addiction to odd meters, and, last but not least, his Buddhist faith.

Christian Artmann: The Middle of Life
by Troy Dostert
As he continues to do his part in maintaining the relevance of the flute in contemporary jazz, Christian Artmann also provides plenty of food for thought in his wide-ranging, thoughtfully constructed compositions. There is a contemplative dimension to his vision, evident on Our Story (Sunnyside, 2018), which explored the interdependency of human relationships through the lens ...
Flutist/Composer Christian Artmann Ponders Questions Of Life And The World On 'The Middle Of Life,' Set For June 2 Release By Sunnyside Records
Christian Artmann contemplates his, and our, moment in time with the June 2 release by Sunnyside Records of the aptly titled The Middle of Life. An introspective but highly emotional affair—with a sensitive quartet featuring pianist Laszlo Gardony, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Yoron Israel adding their ruminations—the flutist/composer’s fourth album ponders the state of the ...
Christian Artmann: Our Story
by Troy Dostert
There are a number of different stories woven into Our Story, flautist Christian Artmann's first offering since 2015. Quotations in the liner notes from Zen sages Thich Nhat Hanh and Yasutani Roshi point to Artmann's Buddhist faith, but the fifth cut of the record, “Amazing Grace," makes a bit of room for the Christian narrative as ...

Christian Artmann: Fields Of Pannonia
by Dan Bilawsky
Flautist Christian Artmann's work seems to be rooted in the notion that art can and will stretch as far as the imagination will take it. And in his case, that's quite a distance. With Fields Of Pannonia, Artmann presents an album-length fantasia, bringing jazz language, baroque influences, impressionistic ideals, swing, straight-eighth grooves, open-ended thoughts, and solidly-structured ...
