P. J. Perry Featuring Bill Mays: This Quiet Room
by Jack Bowers
In jazz, as in almost any other pursuit, there really is no stand-in for experience. P. .J. Perry, now well into his seventh decade, has been a titan on Canada's saxophone scene for more than half a century, while California-born pianist Bill Mays, three years Perry's junior and his able collaborator on the duo album This ...
Meet Andrew Rothman
by Tessa Souter and Andrea Wolper
Lawyer, audiophile, lifelong arts enthusiast, our newest Super Fan's life plan was to be a classical pianist, until college took him in another direction. But it was two “major epiphanies" (the first time he heard Miles Davis and, later, Bill Evans) that turned him into a jazz Super Fan--such a Super Fan, in fact, that he ...
Jazz Musician of the Day: Bill Mays
All About Jazz is celebrating Bill Mays' birthday today! “I was born in Sacramento, CA" (William Allen Mays) Feb. 5, 1944. “There was always music in our home. My dad, Bill Sr., was a minister, and played the piano, organ, trombone, guitar and harmonica, so gospel music was the first music I heard. My mom, Martha, ...
Jay Thomas: We Always Knew

L'ultimo hipster. La vita e la musica di Mark Murphy
by Angelo Leonardi
Ballard Jazz Festival Preview: A Seattle Rite Of Spring
The Ballard Jazz Festival, Seattle's most anticipated and community oriented jazz event, will take place May 17-20, and will headline legendary saxophonist, Chico Freeman.
