Damon Brown is a musician who is enthusiastically exploring the possibilities of the 6 string bass guitar. His 2008 debut CD Falling Forward captures his compositional and bass work in the modern jazz genre. Brown’s recorded works feature his playing in ways that expand his role as a bassist and leader. “I am always wanting to find creative ways to communicate with listeners through my instrument” Brown states, and he adds, “Even though I feature the bass guitar in unconventional roles, my focus is making my compositions as musical and expressive as possible.” As he draws heavily from the jazz traditions, Brown does not shy away from swinging on bass guitar even though he is an accomplished double bassist

Shaun Johannes

Born:

My musical career started in late 1996 when I started teaching myself how to play piano and to read music notation. My development on the bass guitar started in 1999. My first ever musical performance on piano was at my high school’s music evening in 1997. I continued to perform at school where I led the singing of hymns at the morning assemblies. I also played extensively for my church at church services where I would play for the Sunday school and on occasion the normal congregation in the event that the organist was late or absent. My first public performance outside of school was with my piano teacher George Werner and trumpeter Reginald ‘Blackie’ Tempi at the Cavendish Square Mall at some coffee bar in the centre

Born:

Every now and then, just when you thought you had things all neatly arranged in their proper order, someone comes along and not only upsets everything you've done, but demands that you change your entire way of thinking before you can even begin to put them back together again. François Rabbath is one of those people. Born in Aleppo, Syria into a musical family of six boys and three girls, François discovered the double bass at the age of thirteen when one of his brothers brought an instrument home and allowed him to experiment with it. When the family moved to Beirut, Lebanon he found an old copy of Edouard Nanny's Contrabass Method in a tailor shop and with some difficulty, since he read neither music nor French, began to teach himself

Musician

Michael Herring's Vertigo

Michael Herring's Vertigo featuring David Binney The “unusual instrumental colours, carefully composed rhythmic structures and catchy-but-offbeat melodies” (J.D. Constidine, The Globe and Mail) of Michael Herring’s Vertigo have been amped-up by the addition of New York saxophonist David Binney, enabling Vertigo to transcend standard jazz fare. Binney, called “something brand-new " a wind stirring up the status quo of the current jazz scene” (Thomas Conrad), adds the fire of the Downtown scene to Vertigo’s mix of groove-driven composed and improvised elements. Herring’s compositions for Vertigo are “forthright, well-organized ventures with tight horn arrangements, ensemble colors and rhythmic buoyancy” (Jay Collins, SIGNAL to NOISE), and naturally possess the voice of the younger Downtown scene
