Bryan and the Aardvarks

Bryan Copeland formed Bryan and the Aardvarks in order to explore an inventive new sound that derived from his jazz training as well as his upbringing in pop and country music. The music he writes for the quartet combines a hushed intimacy with memorable, singable melodies and a narrative directness that nevertheless leaves space for expressive improvisation. Victor Murillo
Victor Murillo, Bassist/Composer/Arranger, was born in Santa Barbara, California and is a first generation Mexican-American. Victor picked up the guitar for the first time during his freshman year in high school. Without having formal training, Victor decided to play in the school’s jazz band. It wasn’t until the end of his Junior year that the school’s jazz band was in need of a bass player. That was when Victor decided to take on the challenge. At age 16, he found himself gigging three nights a week playing with all the local musicians. It was also here where he discovered his forte in latin music

Ian Stewart
Ian Stewart was born and raised in Syracuse NY, growing up with the sounds of his father’s record collection which included the likes of Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Return to Forever and Weather Report. He took up the electric bass at age 12 and the upright bass at 16. While in high school he had the privilege of having numerous mentors including Phil Flanigan, Ed Castillano, Jeff Campbell, Howard Potter and many of the other musicians and educators in Central and Western New York. He was also fortunate enough to begin gigging at an early age in the various bars, clubs and restaurants in the Syracuse and Rochester areas. Upon graduation Ian continued his studies at State University of New York at Purchase College were he received his BM in Jazz Studies in 2008

Dan Brown
Daniel Brown comes from an eclectic musical background that includes Jazz, Klezmer, Rock, and everything in between. He received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Studio Music with an emphasis in String Bass Performance from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at George Mason University. He has studied bass and improvisation with Rusty Holloway, Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, Mark Boling, Gregory Tardy, Michael Moore, Glenn Dewey, and Wade Beach. He has performed with such musical luminaries as Jerry Coker, Donald Brown, Sean Jones, Harold Mabern, Wade Beach, Jeremy Wilson, Seth Kibel, Allyn Johnson, Joe McCarthy, Bill Mobley and Gregory Tardy

Shimpei Ogawa
Born:
Born in Okazaki, Aichi, Japan in 1994, Shimpei started playing electric bass at the age of 13. He would quickly switch to an upright bass after participating in a local jazz big band workshop and falling in love with the art of jazz. He started taking lessons from Tsuyoshi Shimada and played in the Okazaki Junior Jazz Orchestra: “Beans” where he would learn the styles of Count Basie and other legendary musicians from the “swing era”. Shimpei moved to Tokyo in 2012 and started playing in local venues while studying jazz and classical bass with Osamu Koichi and Yasuyuki Se respectively

Ben Feldman
Born:
Ben Feldman is New York bassist and composer from Seattle, WA. He started playing music at age 13, and he quickly began working as a professional bassist, playing with Seattle luminaries including Jay Thomas, Mark Taylor, Dawn Clement, Johnaye Kendrick, Bill Anschell and many others. He has performed with the 2017 Grammy Jazz band and 2017 Vail Jazz band, as well as nationally recognized musicians Stefon Harris, Sullivan Fortner, Regina Carter, Matt Wilson, Dave Liebman, and Joey Alexander. He is also recognized for his work as a composer and arranger. He currently attends Manhattan School of Music and is a student of Ron Carter and Buster Williams.
