The Dave Markee Jazz Collective

The Croydon Jazz Festival is now in its third year, and promises to become a major national and international event. Last year's event is dedicated to the memory of jazz giant John Coltrane and features many fine players including illustrious saxophonist Don Rendell and The Dave Markee Trio with drummer Martin Drew (Oscar Peterson Trio) and guest vocalist Jessi Markee. Legendary pianist Stan Tracey brings his quartet, continuing his long standing partnership with saxophonist par excellence, Bobby Wellins. A very exciting new initiative is the Croydon Young Jazz Star Award, a competition and mentorship programme for talented youngsters

3 Cohens

The three Cohen siblings, Yuval, Anat and Avishai, have had a very similar musical path. Growing up in Tel-Aviv under the same roof, attending the same day schools and the same music Conservatory in the afternoons, have helped shape their musical taste, approach and ideas.

They Attended the Tel-Aviv School for the Arts, the "Thelma Yalin" high school for the arts and the "Jaffa" Music conservatory.

The 3Cohens had a classical music background that included some symphonic orchestral playing. But it didn't take long before the 3 discovered their life long love to jazz music.

Sound Factory

Sound Factory are Julie P. (vocals & programming), Giovanni “MJ” Signoretti (piano & keyboards) and Roberto “Bob” Baruffaldi (drums & more). Back in summer 2002, at a special musical and poetry event in Rome, where many different artists followed one other, Giovanni played for the first time with the singer/songwriter and composer Julie P. as an acoustic duo, piano and voice. After this the pair decided to start working together joining their different musical backgrounds, giving birth to the Sound Factory project. Giovanni then started along with Julie the work of production, creating new songs, changing some of her old songs and taking care of the arrangementes and composing the parts of all the instruments. The intense work of the pair gave birth to the realease of “Dreaming on” (2007), a DEMO CD including thirtheen tracks and featuring the precious collaboration, as supervisor and more, of the drummer Roberto “Bob” Baruffaldi who, other than being part of the live line-up (together with Giacomo Anselmi/guitar and Fabio Penna/bass and Valerio Passi/2nd guitar), also entered the project in full title

Greg Gisbert - Trumpet Fiery, honest, and maniacally talented, Greg Gisbert hit the national jazz scene at an early age and seems to have been on the road ever since. He ventured forth from his childhood home in Denver to attend Berklee, but soon found himself wandering around a tour bus dodging insults from Buddy Rich. He eventually settled in New York, and over the years has been an integral player with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Horace Silver, Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Shew, Maria Schneider, John Fedchok, and the Smithsonian, Carnegie Hall , and Vanguard Big Bands. In addition to also recording with most of these groups, Greg also has three CD’s out as a leader on the Criss Cross label, with such notable sidemen as Billy Drummond, Chris Potter, and Gregory Hutchinson. Ron Allen

The History of HRO With the combined efforts of Ron Allen (Leader), Aston Beckford (Trumpeter) and Agonsa Frye (Trumpeter and Arranger), the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra (H.R.O.) was created over twenty years ago. Mr. Herbie Jones, a former trumpeter and arranger in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, was a mentor and supporter of the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra. The orchestra maintains a nucleus of ten (10) veteran musicians. These musicians have engaged in performances around the world and acquired college degrees in Music Performance and in Education. As a result, their contributions have provided a firm foundation over a span of twenty years

Friends of Friends, comprised of Joe Berkovitz, Scott Samenfeld and David Mann, features original compositions from Joe Berkovitz and Scott Samenfeld along with a few choice jazz standards. Joe Berkovitz is a Boston-based pianist and composer with a style spanning many genres, from jazz to medieval music to funk. He attended New England Conservatory, where he studied with Jaki Byard, Ran Blake and George Russell among others. He has performed live with award-winning clarinetist Don Byron, and appears on Byron's Elektra/Nonesuch recording /The Tuskegee Experiments/. Bassist Scott Samenfeld has performed and taught around Boston since 1970 when he attended Berklee

Metropolitan Klezmer

Metropolitan Klezmer, founded in 1994, is the collaborative adventure of seven exceptional New York-based musicians creating inspired interpretations and original compositions around a panorama of traditionally eclectic Yiddish repertoire. The band was formed by drummer/Yiddish film scholar EvevSicular with multi-talented world music artists Ismail Butera (accordion) and Michael Hess (violin, neyflutes, kanun zither) plus ubiquitous downtown bass and tuba treasure Dave Hofstra, and originallyvfeatured klezmer legend Howie Leess (b. 1920) on clarinet & tenor sax. Since their debut at John Zorn'sNew Jewish Music Fest, the group has expanded to include vocalist Melissa Fogarty and a dynamic hornsection: Debra Kreisberg (clarinet/alto sax), Pam Fleming (trumpet/fluegelhorn), and Reut Regev(trombone). Former members also include Steve Elson (reeds) and Rick Faulkner (trombone). Collectively, their experiences span genres from Albanian to Zydeco as well as jazz, Latin, classical,funk, ska and many other styles. Individually, Metropolitan Klezmer players have worked with suchdiverse artists as Bonnie Raitt, The Toasters, Bill Frisell, Toshi Reagon, Juan Carlos Formell, Indigo Girls,Burning Spear, Amy Sedaris, Max Roach, Rufus Wainwright, Nora York, and the Microscopic Septet, aswell as Jewish music performers from the Klezmatics and Andy Statman to David Krakauer, Sephardicstars Alhambra and SF's Charming Hostess. To quote Seth Rogovoy (The Essential Klezmer),Metropolitan Klezmer is "distinguished by just plain great, versatile ensemble playing... exuberant spiritand wit."
