The Stolen Sweets
The Stolen Sweets formed in 2004 with the intention of reviving the songs of 1930s sister act, The Boswell Sisters. Comprised of vocalists Jen Bernard, Lara Michell and Erin Sutherland, guitarists Pete Krebs and David Langenes (both of whom sing) and double bass player Keith Brush, The Sweets' repertoire has expanded to include material from the 1920s -1940s. Their arrangements are still inspired by the Boswells' tight 3-part harmonies, frequent tempo changes and "knowing shrugs and raised eyebrows," as noted by the Oregonian's A&E. Unlike the original Boswell arrangements that featured piano, clarinet, and horns, the Sweets incorporate gypsy jazz accompani- ment, reminiscent of Django Reinhardt. The Boswell Sisters were popular harmony singers in the late 20s and early 30s, keeping company with the likes of the Dorsey Brothers, Bunny Berigan, Eddie Lang, and Benny Goodman -- partnerships that provided the jazz world with some of its most influential recordings. The nature of the music was auspicious and good-humored, providing a ray of hope to listeners during a truly dispiriting economic depression. The Sweets recently returned from their second jaunt to New Orleans where they shared the stage with their dear friends, The Pfister Sisters

Portico Quartet

The Portico Quartet are a bunch of guys in their early twenties who play instrumental music. Formed four years ago from two sets of schoolfriends, they share a house in East London, make recordings, and play festivals and clubs. Yet what distinguishes them from dozens of other Hackney hopefuls is the way they sound - a fresh, unclichéd resynthesis and reinvention of music that's both pleasingly familiar and thrillingly new, like World Music from the future. With largely acoustic resources - percussion, bass and wind instruments - they have conjured and refined a group signature that's immediately recognizable

Basic Food Group

Active since:
Basic Food Group employs rock trio instrumentation to investigate new combinations of musical genres. Compositions are scored in detail with sections allowed for improvisation. Over time the work is "pureed," that is , reworked and rearranged by the entire band, with elements of the music scrambled and shuffled, and new influences added. We approach it as if we were playing electric chamber music, yet each piece might include combinations of latin, reggae, rock, punk, funk, avante-garde or classical forms. The music has three equal parts, with each instrument playing a different, often non-traditional role

Kombu Combo

Take a fiery, intense drummer, mix with uncompromising sax, guitar, bass and vibes musicians, infuse with world music from Brazil, Latin America, Afro-Cuba and India, and allow free-flowing original composition--that’s the core essence of Kombu Combo. The band leader, drummer John DiGiovanni, plays pop, rock, blues, bebop and classical percussion, but throughout his career, jazz has been his home. Most music-lovers from other genres shy away from jazz; John’s concept for his new band Kombu Combo is to enable people from all genres to better enjoy and understand jazz. To accomplish this goal, the band composes melodies that take influence from jazz greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Vic Feldman, mixed with music icons like Frank Zappa and Robert Palmer, and classical composers like Erik Satie

DaylightSaving

Formed in November 2008 and based in Kent in the UK, DaylightSaving is a songwriting duo with a sound that combines elements of jazz, pop, folk and Latin and features soft acoustic guitar, folksy vocals, flute, penny whistle and melodica. Having been told they weren't 'pure jazz enough' by a UK radio station that shall remain nameless, Richard and Kate delight in describing themselves as 'mongrel dogs of jazz-pop fusion and proud of it'. That half of their songs sound more like contemporary folk than either pop or jazz is neither here nor there. We met while Kate was studying music at Canterbury Christ Church University as a mature student (Kate studied songwriting with Jack Hues of Wang Chung), looking for a way to 'do' music, rather than study it, and Richard was looking for a singer
