Opalińska & Whates

Opalińska & Whates. Both versatile and strikingly original musicians, Mira Opalińska (piano) and Douglas Whates (bass) have performed together in many different settings-- their musical paths crossing on projects ranging from contemporary classical to European jazz--this duo emerging as the solution to a common desire to perform music with a pure, intimate dialogue. Theirs is duo of equality and balance in which both improvising instrumentalists choose neither to compete nor vai for attention, but rather expound and converse as one. Brought together by a common aesthetic--not least that music should be deeper than arbitrary patterns of notes--it is that which fuels their inspiration today; here are two musicians, each with distinctive yet complimentary voices, whose sensitive approach and evocative harmonic language combine to conjure music from an enticing palette of the subtlest hues.

Mothers Favorite
Paris Toon and Mothers Favorite Child celebrates the fruits of inspiration through its “Jazz Soul” music. The key element in the Mothers Favorite Child music-making process is recording everything from the scratch vocals to rough jazz soul musical ideas as if it's the final recording. Each recording brings new magic and sometimes evolves into new sounds resulting in multiple interpretations of then and now. MothersFavoriteChild began as a gift of intuition . . . an intricate feeling deep within the core of producer/songwriter Paris Toon. Using his “gift”, Paris carefully assembled a collection of incredibly unique and talented individuals, and bestowed his lyrics and musical thoughts upon them. With much nurturing, this gift grew to become the name for an incredible musical experience that reflects a time when R&B songs would bring impromptu smiles to our faces

Lama Trio

The particularly dynamic and inventive Portuguese jazz scene has a new front with the trio LAMA. Curiously enough, the project was born in Roterdam, where the double bassist and composer Gonçalo Almeida and the trumpeter Susana Santos Silva were at the time (2008) studying in the jazz department of the local conservatory. There, they met the Canadian drummer Greg Smith, who used to work in the nearby dance school. Acting in the frontier line between the “mainstream” and the so called avant-garde, “Oneiros” proposes a particular jazz vision for the 21st century, with an interesting use of electronics
