Joyce DiCamillo Trio: Sunrise Lady
Piano trio discs are nice in that the listener is treated to stripped-down, atomic versions of standards where they might see the skeleton of a classic tune. Joyce DiCamillo and her trio give airy, orchestral readings of a series of standards as different as "You And The Night And The Music" and "Moanin'". On Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments", DiCamillo woos the melody with block chords and Rick Petrone teases out an almost Flamenco character during his double bass solo. "Sunrise Lady" features a spirited introduction from drummer Joe Corsello that gives way to a Latinfest of piano. "I'm A Fool to Want You" is given an almost Bossa feel with Corsello's light Tom work. "Moanin'" is taken at a fist clip, cleverly quoting Miles' "So What" in the head. DiCamillo burns on this Timmons jewel, making this outing more than worth the effort to find.
