Thomas Clausen Trio: Sol

Non si scopre certo oggi che quella danese è una scena jazzistica fervida: sperimentale ed allo stesso tempo attenta alle tradizioni. Ascoltando l'ultimo lavoro in trio di Thomas Clausen, si ha conferma di quel giudizio. Lontanissimo dalle avanguardie, questo Sol riesce comunque a non risultare prevedibile, pur facendo largo uso di forme compositive convenzionali e di canoni del jazz mainstream.

Classe '49, Clausen è cresciuto assorbendo la lezione dei maestri americani di stanza in nord Europa tra gli anni '60 e '70. Di quelle lezioni si avverte ancora fortissima l'eco, in specie nel suo fraseggio. Il solo su "Green Grass" ne è un esempio.

Compositivamente, invece, Clausen non sembra distaccarsi da un'ispirazione essenzialmente shorteriana, con l'impiego di armonie cangianti e coloristiche, che si coniuga all'uso del contrappunto ed all'apparizione occasionale di un melodismo tipico della musica popolare scandinava. Rivelano questo complesso retroterra la concisa "Prelude" - programmatica sin dal titolo - e la rarefatta "Springtime," che apre il disco.

Come molti della sua generazione, anche Clausen affonda le radici della sua musica nel lessico del jazz d'oltreoceano. Non se ne distacca quasi mai completamente, come potrebbero fare improvvisatori europei più giovani. Si ascolti "Bass Space," per averne una prova. Come molti della sua generazione, però, egli elabora una via europea al trio pianistico, giungendo a soluzioni espressive che risuonano in molti altri trio: ad esempio, i punti di contatto di questa formazione con quelle omologhe di Enrico Pieranunzi sono talvolta molto avvertibili (su tutti, nel brano "Flowers & Trees").

Alle dinamiche controllate e soffici che pervadono il disco, fa a tratti da contraltare l'apparizione di un Rhodes, che dà un'intelligente sferzata di aggressività al gruppo ("Green Grass" e "Skumring").

In sintesi, Sol conferma l'usuale poetica di Clausen, fatta di equilibri studiati e di forme eleganti. La formula funziona, pur se (o proprio perché) ampiamente collaudata.
